My family always complains that my music is too slow and doom-laden, so I made a slow, peaceful song (explicitly ripping off Hiroshi Yoshimura, to see if I can replicate some cool stuff). The consensus: “It sounds like the happy-reminiscing part from a movie about a terrible tragedy.” Like, guys.. I can ease off on the ominous rumbling but I cannot do much about the context you completely imagine out of whole cloth

Huh. I just learned that the idiom "to not have a bar of" (as in, to utterly reject) is specifically Australian English.

(Also I learned this by asking a client if “cappuccino monkey” was a typo, rather than silently correcting it. Still ended up recommending a change to "capuchin monkey," but if I had been even slightly more arrogant I would have really made a simius capuccinus out of myself)

Overheard:
Small child: (pointing at an izakaya) What’s that?
Mother(?): A restaurant.
Child: What kind of restaurant?
Mother: A restaurant for grown-ups.
Child: (supremely confident) So everyone has to wear a seatbelt!

The tale of the Little Mermaid implies the existence of the Big Mermaid. (Clicks remote. A picture of Godzilla appears on-screen.) What I’m about to suggest may seem shocking

Ship goes to doctor. Says doctor, I feel like a total fraud. Don’t feel like who people think I am. Don’t have what they expect to see in me. Always afraid I’ll disappoint. Doctor says I have the perfect treatment. Ancient ship made by Theseus is in town. Once used for important pilgrimages. Preserved with loving care for centuries. Sure to cheer you up. Ship says doctor, before I respond to that can I ask you a hypothetical question

BURKE: Let’s all take a deep breath and calm down. The company—
HUDSON: Oh, the company? You mean Weyland-Yutani? More like “We land, you turni-nto alien chow!"
BURKE: You know that’s not an accurate—
HUDSON: We shoulda done a Weyland-U-turn-y the hell out of this place the moment we arrived! (increasingly hysterical) If this is Weyland-Yutani, man, I sure as shit don’t wanna see Curdsland-Yutani!
BURKE: Now that doesn’t even make sense.
HICKS: Enough, Hudson. You’ve had your say-land-Yutani.

Really loving this infuriating new trend of smug rich people being like “See? It just wasn’t realistic to (achieve any progress toward some environmental goal) by 2030. You were wrong and the grown-ups were right.”

Like, no shit we aren’t on track to achieve those goals! You assholes with money and power didn’t take any action except flying around the world first-class to sign pledges! How is this a refutation of the idea that DOING SOMETHING would have helped?!

But choose your questions carefully, traveler, for one of the guards always hates the player, while the other always hates the game.

Couple of albums currently being listened to:
- Dan Blake, Got My Wings — https://theaquariansuite.bandcamp.com/album/got-my-wings — Some parts feel like a midpoint between Einstein on the Beach and, like, 90s ECM. (Which is good, to be clear)
- @SeaFury , atmo — https://seafury.bandcamp.com/album/atmo — Longer pieces than the first album "we who wander" means more time to really dig into the sounds

Like, did Makiko drink Takao’s water like that in 1979? My gut says no.

Folks, I watched “Asura” (or “Ashura no gotoku”) and it really was as absorbing as the hype says. Come for the pre-Bubble asymmetrical sweaters and brown interiors, stay for the actual actors being allowed to act instead of mugging for the camera like the anime characters that originated their roles. I haven’t seen any previous versions but I also enjoyed playing the mental game of “Did Kore-eda change this to make the sisters less react-to-men-ish, or did Mukoda write it this way?”

“You can’t incorporate a map of Italy into lettering! It’s too distinctively shaped! Just do the boot thing like everyone else.”
“Hold my grappa.”

...of a suggestion, and have applied "Don't be an asshole" ethics to it - like, "Yeah, yeah, you want us to wait patiently for maximum safety, we get it... but as long as we don't bump into someone (or blame you if we slip and hurt yourselves), no harm done, right?" And to a large extent that has been tolerated. But now (perhaps because of aging populations) there's more pushback - "Actually, there IS harm done when you brush past me, because it throws me off-balance, which is stressful...
