What’s the opposite of monetising your online presence? Anyway, I’ve done that

(For this thread edited into blog-post form: https://www.sunclipse.org/2026/10/to-zero-at-the-boundary/)

My physics career is dead.

There's no point in trying: There's no funding, it's literally unsafe for me to do the traveling and life-uprooting that are demanded of me to pursue the positions that aren't even funded anymore and that I couldn't accept in good conscience because AI has rotted what institutional morals we had.

My physics career is dead. Not because AI can solve all the physics problems, but because institutions and too many of the people in them are intolerable.

The term 'rando' is an homage to Ayn Rand, the patron saint of reply guys.

Ohh no!

Those $30,000 folding phones are cracking after just a few hours or days.

Angine de Poitrine play Dark Mofo you cowards

#OtD 26 Oct 1977 8000 cotton workers in Kanpur, India, surrounded their factory, locking the bosses inside after their wages were not paid. They then placed gas cylinders on the roof and threatened to start blowing things up. After 54 hours they won https://stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/9865/swadeshi-cotton-mill-riot

Tis super odd that all the bots who normally massively sling phpunit exploits daily haven't re-tooled to use the "super easy and guaranteed to always work the first time" PHP2Shell exploits that researchers claim are out there. Must be that the attackers are lazy. That def has to be it. Yep. Absolutely. There can't be any other explanation.

Wondering if as an experiment...

1) One were to develop a new programming language, let's call it Greg.
2) One were also to write some excellent, complete documentation of that language.
3) One were to absolutely NOT put any example programs of that language anywhere online. Just don't use the language at all.

If you were then to say Claude for example - "Write me a program to perform task X in the new programming language Greg, here is the language's documentation", I suggest that there is absolutely no chance in hell it would output a viable program

LLMs can't code because they "understand" programming from first principles, they can only code because of the library of code in their training data.

I have fucked something up royally and don't know how to unfuck it. It does, of course, involve Node.js.

Patches for the latest vulnerability are available for v22 and v22.

For some reason, I'm on v23. There is no patch to v23.

If I try to change my version to v22 or v24, I get errors about my system not having glibc 2.28.

Attempting to compile and add glibc 2.28 to the system, apparently I don't know how to do it as an *option*, because I overwrote the system glibc, and my word were there segfaults eveywhere, had to restore the the whole thing from a backup.

Why do v22 and v24 have a requirement for glibc 2.28 but v23 doesn't, and is happy (but has a massive vulnerability).

Brazil's Lula re-elected president, according to projections based on 93% of votes counted. https://www1.folha.uol.com.br/poder/eleicoes/2026/apuracao/2turno/brasil/

The 9 albums that made me, current as of whatever I could come up with this morning, mileage may vary, answer would be different tomorrow https://www.my9albums.com/s/SE68q5G4EC

Nobody has done all 20! How many for you??

DST-end is confusing, isn't it?

Strudel has adopted a post-ai humane policy for live coding development:

All community members should be treated with respect and kindness. We welcome contributors to the community who are ready to follow this policy as well as our code of conduct.

Principles
* We wish to protect the humanity of our communities and projects, to support the motivation and well-being of all of its contributors and users.
* To this end, contributors and other users of our projects should not have to engage with LLM-generated code and text as part of their community work.
* We recognise that LLM-based scraping and generation of (A)GPL code shared by ourselves and others is of questionable legality. For example, under many juristictions, LLM-generated work does not have a copyright holder and can therefore not be licensed under the (A)GPL.
* A contributor's personal use of LLMs and related technology is their own business, whether for research, analysis, bug discovery or other assistive technology, so long as the output is not included in any contributions to our projects.

Act stupid.

All those "political compass" questionnaires really need to ask more abstract questions than "realistic" questions, because their purpose is not to answer policy questions about the various parties, but more abstract alignment questions about how you solve problems.

So an example might be: You have an apple tree. It will not grow apples until spring, when it will grow way too many apples. What do you do?

- Take all the apples for yourself, and spend spring preserving the apples through dehydration, making marmalade / jam, etc.
- Share the apples by giving out apples and asking friends and family to help in creating preserves, dehydration, etc then share those too.
- Share the apples by just giving people access to the tree, even though you might end up with not enough apples for yourself.
- Take all the apples for yourself, but just eat what you want and leave the rest to rot.
- Eat what you want, and sell the rest of the apples (even at low prices).
- Eat what you want, and sell the rest of the apples (at high prices, leaving the rest to rot).

Woohoo! So happy to see the first commercial flight, Jetstar JQ362 to the Gold Coast, depart from the brand new Western Sydney International Airport (aka Nancy Bird-Walton) in Australia.
