If you need 256GB of RAM for a model to run, you cannot just do information theory magic and make it work just the same in 256MB.

Anthropic is increasingly sounding like the dudes ~40ya who were were absolutely certain they could get to any arbitrary degree of compression by just iterating. Thankfully, they couldn’t get funding…

You cannot replicate a 300b LLM onto my washing machine’s 32MB of flash. It cannot run in my router’s 256MB of RAM. The concept that an advanced model can somehow make itself small enough to run on tiny devices is absurd. LLM smears the code/data boundary and encode sthe information of both.

I blundered and bought weed gummies that are actually quite tasty to the degree that I just want to keep eating them.

Very dangerous.

I am so mystified by this still being a thing.
I see a fair number of these because I see ‘trap’ traffic and some of the mail that we block for customers but keep for review.
NONE of them are credible. I don’t like calling people dumb, but I don’t know how any of the DocuSign or similar forgeries can fool *anyone*

The TimeMachine problem is not solved. Apparently it is doing one backup and then failing the next time.

And it all worked yesterday. <sigh>

#TIL:
1. IIS remains an idiotic piece of crap
2. Latest macOS Tahoe update breaks networked TimeMachine.
3. Using an IP to pre-mount the target disk fixes #2

I’m so fucking tired of stupid software tricks.

The AI isn’t going to destroy humanity intentionally, it’s MUCH worse than that. Long before they gain actual intention and capacity to make their own plans at the strategic level, we will follow their idiotic lead right over the cliff, spawning not a successor society of human-made AIs but a simple basic Dark Age.

This is ridiculous. And terrifying.

We’ve created pseudo-AI which is so persuasive for so many people that it is corroding the informal systems by which people become actually good at various things.

We’re going to collapse all of our complex systems because people are learning to rely on bullshit generators which never say
“I don’t know,” have no discernment between correct and incorrect statements, and frequently emit convincing absurdities.

Why no, pink-haired young lady who just followed me and 60 other dudes but has no profile other than a couple of rose emojis and no posts at all in your day old account, I DO NOT believe that you are real.

SHOVE OFF!

USPS is one of those entities like aircraft carriers, where a decision to change course is implemented with substantial delay.

This is why I have no IRL guy friends.
Not kidding. American men are predominantly vile. Anyone who claims otherwise hasn't been paying attention.

Having injured my shoulder (and whole arm) earlier this week, I am fearing sharing this fate. The wrist, forearm, and bicep are all better (wrist: as good as it ever is, which is not…)
But I still cannot scratch my back with my left arm, or use it to pull up my pants.

But I can’t worry about that right now, I have to fight SSA for my son. Because I can’t wait to need to deal with Medicaid+Medicare for him.

This is part of why I’ve resisted the temptation to attempt online anonymity or even strong pseudonymity. It creates an attractive target for miscreants. That’s not a judgment of anyone who already has motivated miscreants who are likely to be searching for them online by name or who have activities online for which they need an identity but it cannot be associated with their public persona. Y’all do y’all, but for me it’s more masks than I’m willing to maintain.

In the context of engaging in the governance of a FOSS project, disclosure of conflicts of interest is a responsibility of participants and using essentially public information (LI profile) to point out that a participant shirked that responsibility is in service of the project.

Whether it is “doxxing” is a semantic question about a neonym that has not really resolved its semantics. It is documenting a person’s identity in a forum where they don’t want that.

Every leader at Apple needs to read this.

Once upon a time, for many years even when it had a pricetag, I installed the latest Macintosh OS on the day it was available. That was because it always had new useful features that addressed real problems. No kidding.

But it became a nuisance to do that because Apple decided they didn’t really like being a Unix, they needed a new look every year, & fixing bugs was less important than new apps.

Yeah, AT&T spammed my very much non-public work address, trying to sell me an iPhone. Great way to stop having the SpamAssassin Project claim that they’re not spammers.

And always remember: just because it’s not the SARS-Coronavirus-2019 strain causing your illness is no reason to believe that it isn’t some other unidentifiable virus which may or may not be as contagious or as pathogenic as Covid.
Stay home if you have respiratory viral disease symptoms. If you absolutely cannot stay home, MASK UP when you go out. Masks reduce how much of your viral shed is able to reach others.
