TIL there's an archive of the #JargonFile aka "Hacker's Dictionary" that includes old tape backup versions back to the first version of the file, dated 1976-08-12.

https://jargon-file.org/archive/

I'm pretty sure I first ran across later versions of the Jargon File on the early web sometime in the 90s. It was a huge part of my developing awareness of nerdery outside my tiny local bubble.

archive.org first saw the pre-1981 versions on 2018-12-25. https://web.archive.org/web/20181225110613/https://jargon-file.org/archive/

Love the whole "we only accept payment via $OVERLORD" + "adblockers and private mode prevent payment" + "'skip login and pay as guest' means give us your email address" + "also we ($OVERLORD) already have your phone number associated with that email so type in the separate codes we sent to both and we'll ship your thing to the name and address on file" + "wanna upload a scan of your face to make authentication easier?" (jfc no) + "thanks guest!"

Sometimes #TallProblems is spiderwebs on the path just above everyone else's heads.

tfw you find the right abstraction and complexity just melts away

Look, I complain about web search. But I just heard an Irish folk song (which I don't speak and can only vaguely spell), made my best guess at the spelling on my US phone configured in Italian, and duckduck took me straight to it.

My search, guessing from what I heard: "o roisi da bhatha mhada"
The title: "Óró sé do bheatha abhaile"

Like, I was close on bheatha, but the rest it got from... I dunno, vibes? Vowel-stripping? Or do search models properly do Irish now without context priming?

The dev gave directions in the gitlab issue above for reassigning the keybinding. It didn't work for me. This sort of does: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/59240244/disable-changing-default-keyboard-shortcuts-in-iterm2
Specifically that gives directions for configuring the OS to use a different keybinding for that menu option in that app. I didn't see an obvious way to use that screen to completely disable the keybinding.

Mostly I'm working around this by changing my muscle memory to the grow font size on my work Mac until I can acclimate to a better terminal.

Details:
iTerm2 v3.7 adds a clippings side panel to aid claude code integration https://iterm2.com/downloads/stable/iTerm2-3_7_0.changelog
The keyboard shortcut is Shift-Cmd-= https://github.com/gnachman/iTerm2/commit/b1d9d1a09#diff-5ea081aa810421c709a2a27a2488a3448481ef9bc936e088fdf9cba750af2236R1005-R1006
Also known as Cmd-+, the widespread shortcut to increase font size.
Internally iTerm2 supports this internally as Cmd-=. MacOS labels this as Cmd-+, and afaict the dev doesn't seem bothered that this is now just incorrect. https://gitlab.com/gnachman/iterm2/-/work_items/13022

On the lookout for a new terminal emulator for Mac. An unrelated issue forced me to upgrade #iTerm2 to v3.7. That just cost me most of the day to work around a misfeature that was added in support of #AISlop.

I'm reading some good things about #WezTerm. Anything else I should be looking at?

Inside you are two wolves. Inside each wolf are two more wolves, recursively. You have received advice from a bread-carrying passerby about a house ahead with infinite rooms. Each room is occupied by a grandma. Each grandma has a semaphore with capacity to receive bread twice or be eaten at most once. Propose an algorithm for your wolves to exit the containment structure and consume half of the grandmas before the passerby fills half of them with bread. Describe its execution characteristics.

How fortunate I am to exist in a world where such immense beauty appears in the sky for millions of people to see.

In Jan 2025 police harassed a #CopCity activist. Feds arrested him Dec 2025, alleging he gave them his #GrapheneOS duress PIN, which wiped his phone. They claim this constitutes destroying his phone to keep it from seizure, ignoring the police's own lies and repression in stopping him.

There's an article going around by Guardian article Timothy Pratt. It's good! Here's the Dec 2025 one by #Atlanta Community Press Collective's Matt Scott. https://atlpresscollective.com/2025/12/05/samuel-tunick-atlanta-activist-arrest/

Apparently triangle and circle bathroom signs are ubiquitous and completely normalized in some places, even outside California. To the point that I see people expressing surprise that anyone could possibly be unfamiliar with it.

I have never seen this. I don't even remember noticing when I've been in California. (It's been a few years.)

Wiiiild.

Does anyone know what kind of #microphone Sam (Lestat) uses onstage in #TheVampireLestat? Is it even a real model, or just a prop?

I am a lowly newb at mic identification. My spidey sense is telling me that grill pattern looks like it's made for side-address and that using it top-address like he does probably makes his engineers hate him. Or, yaknow, *would* if this were real. But I wanna check my facts before I get into ridiculous fan arguments with people who appreciate preposterous pedantry.

I'm preparing to visit southern Florida to care for a sick family member. I'm looking for recent travel safety info. I'm a white adult trans woman, years into transition. I'm a US citizen and people are unlikely to challenge that. My id shows my updated name and gender.

Most of the safety links I've found are old or undated. It looks like my biggest risk is restrooms, and I can minimize the risk by leaving when challenged. Is that right?

Boosts appreciated.

Looked up and saw this beautiful scene a few evenings ago.

It's springtime in #DecaturGA.

the existence of existence implies the existence of its opposite, exisrelaxed. but my ex was never relaxed. this contradiction proves the invaliditiy of the premise. existence is fake.

Squee! Got a debug dongle attached to my eurorack (specifically my Daisy patch.Init() ) and pushed some code to it live.

Technically I've done all that before, but this time a) it's in a little self-contained skiff that's easier to pull out, and b) I'm letting myself ignore infrastructure and engineering and instead just hack. Both of these significantly lower the bar for shoving weird noises in my ears. So I'm calling that a big win!

I've just learned yesterday that Ireland's National Archives are digitizing and preparing their 1926 census for public digital release this April.

https://nationalarchives.ie/collections/search-the-census/about-the-census-collections/census-1926/

Perhaps I'm the last to hear about it, as I'm very much a novice genealogy researcher. But for anyone else who's still learning like I am, there you have it!

Today in the US, Betty Boop enters the public domain, but specifically in her earliest representation, a puppy fursona. She belongs to the furries now.
