    “Where did all the principled people who would hold the line against slop code in open source go?”

    Maybe they left or were pushed out because they objected to Nazi tattoos, allegiance to Gamergate with threats of doxxing and SWATting, gendered violence at developer meetings and conferences, convicted child abusers at conferences, transphobia, ableism, and platforming racism because “he can code” or “he wrote a book.”

    Did we really expect action against bad things from the so-called leaders who let WILDLY BLOODY OBVIOUS asshole behaviour happen without consequences?

    It turns out, like we told you, that “but he does good work” is wrong.

    The work eventually stops, too.

    The people with the moral fortitude of overcooked pasta when presented with multiple credible allegations or even a conviction of the most heinous violence? Those guys? You expect them to defend anyone? They didn’t even defend themselves.

    They are still blaming the whistleblowers for the fact that they faced the mildest of temporary consequences.

    Leaders, my ass.

    @naturepunk @akareilly gonna be honest with you: I have never met a kernel developer of any OS that wasn't weird. They're all strange and quirky in different ways. Sometimes alarmingly so. The amount of "this person is insane" vibes you get seems to scale proportionally with how complex the subsystem is that they're maintaining.

    @akareilly All of the "but he does good work" assholes now have Claude "doing the work" for them. 🙄

    Like maybe we should have gotten rid of them a long time ago before they had the chance to do this.

    @akareilly I personally don't see massive correlation between those groups of people.

    There's nothing about being socially aware that stops you getting a dopamine hit when you "achieve something" without doing the work. There's nothing that makes you immune to getting addicted to that.

    @akareilly They all have acquired brain injuries from repeated infections with an airborne virus that causes neuro-vascular damage, and can no longer code without AI, can no longer recognise that they can’t code without AI (“I’m more productive now”), and so have become enthusiastic proponents of how enabling are their mental walking sticks.

    @metaning

    While post-viral illnesses like Long COVID and ME/CFS exist, I’m hesitant to link disabilities to mediocre tech bros being assholes. They were assholes before COVID, taking credit for colleagues’ work. Now they take credit for the bots’ work.

    I know plenty of people with brain fog who were and remain against every torment nexus that comes along.

    @akareilly I think you’re looking too closely at specifics, and not at the wider picture; software development is going to shit because *everything* is going to shit, because our species as a whole took a baseball bat to the head, and has refused, indeed is largely incapable of recognising & acknowledging it.

    It’s not just douchebros going AI psychosis. It’s formerly respected, measured people. The leadership classes who should have been the conservative stewards of the next generation.

    @metaning

    I am looking at specifics and the wider picture, including changes in politics in the wake of the mass disabling event of 1918.

    “Techbros are disabled now” is not an explanation for the current AI slop invasion of open source, and it leads down a road I’d rather not follow.

    @akareilly I’m not saying they’re disabled either. Disability is something done TO a person with a medical condition BY society, and techbros are certainly not experiencing any systemic disadvantage as a result of the ableist obliviousness of others. BUT the widespread AI psychosis that is infecting every single aspect of the formerly stable, respectable leadership classes of all these open source projects has to be accounted for. Were they always bad actors in disguise, or have they changed?

    @metaning @anhedonie

    2007 is when a guy with a Nazi tattoo harassed a woman off the internet for having the gall to write really good books about learning to code.

    There's a man convicted of having child abuse materials who is allowed at C++ conferences.

    It's not safe to leave a drink unattended at a hacker event in Berlin or Hamburg, and the likely culprits are known. Shit hit the fan in 2015.

    Ableism in FOSS has long taken the form of flagrant discrimination, or a refusal to even try to incorporate accessibility in a project with the resources to do so. Con crud is a form of violence against disabled people - see the whining about putting on masks from hackers who claim to be risk analysis geniuses.

    Open source was a Nazi bar long before COVID.

    Don't blame this on post-viral disabilities. No, bringing up the social model of disability doesn't save you. What's the solution if Long COVID is the problem? Is it horribly discriminatory? Of course it is. You had a bad take, and you don't have to hold on to it.

    @akareilly @anhedonie Yes, these are all terrible things, but did the CSAM Man’s software carry the implicit threat it might erase your data suddenly, or leak your bank accounts because his fetishes made him an incompetent programmer?

    His Covid acquired brain damage that made him incapable of recognising his AI psychosis did that.

    @metaning @akareilly They were never stable and respectable. That is what people have been saying for literally decades. There is no sudden change happening. AI's mass output has just drawn yet more attention to what critics have been saying for years.

    @distrowatch @akareilly The personal politics of the bad people in the open source community didn’t make their products *untrustworthy* as functional infrastructure.

    The Covid brain damage that made them more susceptible to AI psychosis, and reach for LLM tools to recover their former “brilliance” did.

    @akareilly Linus Torvalds said if you don't like AI slop, leave.

    Netbsd has rejected AI, and alpinebsd.org is working to get as many Alpine packages running under NetBSD's Linux emulation as it can.
