This year's lessons - grow carrots in a deep box filled with fresh, fluffy, loamy soil with any sticks and stones removed.

Plant the carrots as soon as the soil is warm and there's no risk of frost. Don't plant them in lines, shake the seed over the soil and kind of brush them in with your fingers. Then cover with chicken wire so the birds dont eat them.

...then leave them in there all spring, summer, and autumn, and pick them at the end of October.

I'm making a chicken stew with these tonight. I've got some turnips that only really grew the leaves, so I'll put turnip greens in too.

But I am really happy about the carrots. I was making excitable noises while picking them.
