this post is why we'll be defederating from bsd.cafe, but I'm waiting a day so those of you who have mutuals there can decide what to do about it

    https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/@stefano/117200148854647752 (https://archive.li/mHbuW)

this guy thinks being a nazi is a matter of methods. it is not. his inability or unwillingness to identify nazis makes anything he moderates dangerous.

he provides bad-faith summaries of his critics' arguments to make them ridiculous. they are not. his inability or unwillingness to understand his critics means things will not get better on his sites.

if you've got friends on bsd.cafe or any of their affiliated sites, you or they will need to make other arrangements.

@khm I couldn't tell from his post what he was defending, but the sorts of replies I saw supporting him made it clear that it couldn't be anything good. The replies to the post you linked are a great seed for a blocklist.

@dalias @dcoderlt @khm I think there may be a misunderstanding about what I meant, and perhaps I could have expressed it more clearly.

For years, I have tried to make the BSD Cafe a healthy, constructive and tolerant community. That's something I care deeply about. And precisely because of that, intolerance is not welcome here. Nazis and fascists have never been welcome in the BSD Cafe, and they never will be.

What I was asking for was something different: not to start pile-ons or condemn people in advance, but to judge them by what they actually say and do.

Someone asking a question about a controversial distribution does not automatically make that person a Nazi. Someone being curious about something, discussing it, or even asking an uncomfortable question is not enough for me to assign them such a serious label.

If, on the other hand, that person goes on to advocate Nazi or fascist ideas, promotes hatred or discrimination, threatens people, or behaves in ways that are clearly incompatible with the kind of community we are trying to build, then the situation is very different. And yes, they are out.

This isn't about considering Nazism "just another opinion", and it certainly isn't about making the BSD Cafe a welcoming place for Nazis. Quite the opposite.

It's about trying to build a community where we can be open-minded without being naive, tolerant without tolerating intolerance, and where we judge people on evidence and behaviour rather than starting a shitstorm around them before they've actually done anything.

You're absolutely free to disagree with that approach, of course, and you're free to defederate from the BSD Cafe if you feel our moderation philosophy is incompatible with yours. That's part of the freedom the Fediverse gives all of us.

I only wanted to clarify this because I don't think we're as far apart on the fundamental point as your post might suggest.

@stefano @dcoderlt @khm The post you were defending was abusive and was classic whining about somebody identifying fascism in the AI industry as fascism, accusing them of overreacting, being irrational, etc.

The question is not whether they are a nazi, but whether you understand the parable of the nazi bar: that by choosing to tolerate behavior like that, you are choosing to have a space where the targets of that abusive behavior will feel unwelcome.

@dalias @dcoderlt @khm I went back up to find the post you were referring to - namely, Graham's. And I agree that it’s not in keeping with the spirit of the community.

Regarding that, I already contacted Graham this morning, and no, I didn't like his attitude. But on average, Graham is a balanced and reasonable person, and anything but a nazi. That's why I'm trying to understand and clarify.

My original post was not related to this situation.

@stefano @dcoderlt @khm If you're unwilling to talk about what situation your original post is related to, but insist on speaking in broad generalities, it's going to sound like you're defending something indefensible.

@stefano @dcoderlt @khm And regarding Graham, he was using an alt account to block-evade in that conversation, continuing to contact people who had indicated they did not want further contact with him. That is beyond his attitude just having an off day. That's deliberate abusive behavior.
