I've just watched Jaws (1975) for the first time.

What have you people used to get away from Adobe Lightroom? This is about raw photos but also about properly managing a photo library.

I know about both Rawtherapee and Darktable. I've used both in the past but mostly for one-shot RAW conversion. I've seen that Darktable now has machine learning support (e.g. Segment Anything for masking) which is a plus. But are there other (not necessarily open source) apps for photo libraries? Like what Affinity is for Photoshop...?

My review of Hoppers:
0:00-0:30 This is nothing like the trailer. This is boring.
0:30-1:00 Ah, this is the movie from the trailer.
1:00-1:30 This is nothing like the trailer. This is awesome!!

no joke

(hat tip to @libreoffice whose table feature has no problems in dealing with this kind of stuff)

I read about this 10+ years ago and have been writing down recipies like that ever since.

The city of #Munich is admitting that our water supply is running low. We're famous for our good drinking water which is fed by aquifers from an alpine region to the south. But that region's glaciers have been melting for a while and there's less and less snow in winter.
For the next couple of weeks there's a total ban on watering your lawn, washing your car outside of commercial car washes (don't ask, this is Germany, apparently this is still a thing), etc...

It’s 13 degrees (Centigrade) above average in southern Germany in the middle of June. Radio station is assuring us that El Niño will (edit: not!) affect Germany much. It‘ll affect South America, Asia and India more. The next radio station runs a commercial for cheap flights to the Maldives.

I managed to go through all parts of the system settings without mouse, install pending updates and reboot ✌️
The install experience was so-so: after installing the user account appeared deactivated (reboot fixed it but without a mouse I had to ctrl-alt-F1 to a console and reboot from the command line). Airplane mode shows as activated (maybe because the mini PC has neither bluetooth nor wifi?)
But I love the look of #elementaryOS even though some fonts are very tiny.

Installing #elementaryOS on a PC without a mouse (mini PC without bluetooth and I don't have a USB mouse at hand). It works! But it's a sobering experience. It's often a surprise where the keyboard focus will go if you use tab or cursor keys. Once I ended up in a situation where the keyboard focus is nowhere. Dropdowns don't highlight the currently selected option without a mouse.
One thing is very cool though: the main menu's search box allows you to type "reboot".

@keepassxc maybe info about that could be added to the download page, right below where it says that the VC redistributable is required. I was pulling my hair out and would have never guess that remote desktop would be a problem.

Or maybe make it work the first time you launch KeepassXC and ask whether this anti-recording feature should be enabled? Or detect the presence of common remote desktop apps like Teamvier, Anydesk and whatnot?

I was trying to set up #KeepassXC on a Windows machine via remote desktop. It didn't work. Installed the required Microsoft frameworks, tried the portable version... nada. Icon showed up on the task bar but no window appeared.

A search then revealed what was going on: You need to add a parameter to the KeepassXC launcher in your start menu! Otherwise a security feature is prohibiting screen capture of KeepassXC. Wow, I didn't know this capability existed! Cool feature. But very unintuitive.

that first photo is epic #solarpunk

This is the weirdest combination of thumbnails I have ever seen on Netflix 😁

And if you don’t have backups in a place that you own it’s also on you again.

Funny story, that Claude thing. But I hate when I read that „AI goes rogue“. A „misdemeanor“. Or it „apologized“ and „admitted“.

It’s a fricking text extruder that does random things because the algorithm thinks those words fit into its context. If you let such a program execute whatever command it spits out - that’s on you. If the cloud provider keeps backups on the same drive as the original data, that’s on them and you should try suing them. https://c.im/@cdarwin/116479704797697865

Funny video about #StarTrek. Don’t know where the other prt of the „conversation“ is from though 😁 https://mastodon.social/@flexghost/116392576661031710

Watch the whole thing on their website! It's not super long and explainy but it has a lot of shots that you'll play repeatedly to appreciate the tricks they've used.

On of my earliest compositing a-ha moments was when I saw a senior artist draw thin white strokes onto a huge black image and just moved it through the frame to fake rain. Laika did something similar and mechanical for stop-motion photography on Coraline :-)

Great new video from Neil Blevins ( @artofsoulburn ) that fits the hashtags #FacesInThings or #FacesInPlaces: finding inspiration for sci-fi robots and spaceships in everyday objects. It also mentions the works of Eric Geusz (2nd link below)

It's not just RAM. We just bought some Seagate hard disks for our backup file server for 2300€. Last year we bought the same number and capacity of disks for only 1300€ 😬
