@atpfm
Regarding the Overtime subject (Passkeys are a trap), I was hoping for one more viewpoint.
As you all probably know, some foreign (outside U.S.) entities have been sanctioned by the current regime. Locking them out of certain IT systems like email and other messenger services. But also using credit cards and other parts of day to day life.
Could passkey access and functionality be impacted in a similar way?
@ritchey_de I don’t know how they’re “locked out” of the existing things, so I don’t know if they could also be “locked out” of using iCloud Keychain (for anything, including plain passwords, not just passkeys).
@siracusa
Sure, if the service provider is following orders, the login options don’t matter. It was more meant as an example of things happening.
But if the service is not affected by these orders, as you said, the login name and password is something the user “owns”.
I just wonder, if the hardware and OS manufacturer wanted to, could they somehow interfere with passkeys in a way that they couldn’t with letters typed into a text box on your screen?
@caseyliss can you tell us more about your usage of the Sonos app to play audio vs AirPlay? I have a very similar setup to you (Apple gear but Sonos speakers), but I always AirPlay instead.
Of course it’s personal preference but my usage of Overcast and Spotify in the car, with my AirPods, and in the home mean it’s far easier to use AirPlay. If I used the Sonos app I’d have to deal with a different (and worse) UI for Spotify and I don’t even know what I’d do for podcasts.
To be clear, the AirPlay experience is also terrible (works 97% of the time, have to manually choose each speaker each time, and set volume manually for each speaker), but it seems like using the Sonos app would be much more difficult.
It’s kind of like using a car without CarPlay!

@rconti not sure what to say. I don’t want my device to be dedicated to playback, so I find the thing I want in Apple Music on the Sonos app 🤷🏻♂️
@caseyliss do you play podcasts on your Sonos too? I think that’s where I’d find the biggest problem (lack of sync).
@rconti I do, but _very_ rarely. If I did, I’d definitely use AirPlay.
FWIW, I also sometimes AirPlay to one speaker, and then do the mash-down-on-the-play-button thing to have Sonos route it to other speakers internally. (In contrast to having AirPlay do the routing on its end)
@atpfm UniFi Travel Router: No tariff surcharge on the one I ordered Aug 30. 79.99 plus 7.41 tax and $7 shipping which seems perfectly reasonable. They also ship from SLC so everything arrives in CA in 2 days which is nice.
I recently used it on a 3 week trip in Europe and am not sure it was worth the hassle of always trying to get the damn thing connected.
However one easy software improvement would be to not broadcast the SSID until the network is up and the captive portals have been defeated. Having it constantly hijack your partners cell phone data connection is the opposite of user-friendly.
@atpfm ”…the Apple TV is for people who value a high quality experience and are willing to pay a premium for it.
You know, that sucks for those of us who, you know, balk at this price, like that sucks, but that's what this product is.”
But it wasn’t always! Marco is dismissive of the critics and makes it sound like the price always been this high but remember that it was a high quality experience for $129 in June this year and a high quality experience for $69 in October 2016.
@atpfm passkey related. Australia has a myGov service for accessing and linking lots of government services (healthcare, tax, social support etc). I recently got a message prompting me to delete my username and password and to only use the passkey (and phone as two factor).
@atpfm
Not trying to restart the dogpiling on Marco, but I feel like with every new episode he is doubling down on his tone-deaf attitude towards critics of AI and corporate exploitation of the masses.
I don’t expect someone who can afford a vacation home on Fire Island and the purchase of a new luxury vehicle every year or two to relate to my lived experience, but I do expect a person with some education and self awareness to express their deplorable opinions with more sensitivity & grace.
@atpfm Did I miss it or was there no discussion of the HomeView showing photos as a picture frame?
By far one of the best features of the Nest Hub (both cheaper than $300) is displaying photos. Sitting in the kitchen, surfacing interesting photos we’ve taken over the years. Doing the home stuff is like a cheap bonus.
@themightyplanet It’s kind of small for a picture frame, but sure, why not?
@siracusa They should have made it bigger then. The Nest Hub was an acceptable display. The larger Max is wonderful. Both cost less. Of course you have to give Google all your photos instead of Apple to make it work.
Being smaller is what will likely keep us from switching. Even if it’s a pain to have the entire house on both Apple and Google home already.
