@atpfm we’ll have to see how the audio features turn out if they ever come out but anyone with an action button on their phone or watch can discreetly trigger voice memos. Turn on theater mode to hide it’s running.

So, I think most malicious recording activities can be done better already.

If a spouse can unlock your phone messages and browser history will almost certainly give hints of an exit. Not that it excuses recording but an unlocked phone is a goldmine of private data

@atpfm An analogue to “technology allows us to record everything all the time”:
A speeding ticket might be $150.
We all agree speeding is against the law and you shouldn’t do it.
Does GPS and telematics mean we should all start sending thousands a month to the government just because now they can fine you every time you exceed the limit? Of course not!
The regulation was made in the context of the time. The fine was meant to be punitive and preventative (“I might get caught!”).
When the technology changes, the contest must change too.

@atpfm Addendum to @siracusa's update on Listening Mode on a single AirPod. Apparently your only choices are Off and Transparency Mode, at least on my iPhone 13 mini.

@atpfm run your car as long as you are happy with it

My quirky French 7 seater (Citroen C8 from 2013) is currently at 160k miles. I changed the belt at 125k and the clutch at 150k.

No modern SUV will seat 4 almost-adult kids and a dog as comfortably.
I can even remove the seats to a whooping 3 m3 of cargo space.

That car will stay with us as long as I have a family that still wants to go in holidays with me (I know people with the same car at 300k miles).

@atpfm re “did jobs ever explicitly say ‘the Mac was no longer the digital hub, it was the cloud’ in a keynote?” - yes, wwdc 2011, you all saw it in person 🙂

@atpfm Regarding the comparison to augmented note taking. Imagine how your partner and colleagues would react if you would take up a notepad and start taking notes every time you have a conversation with them. They would just stop talking to you. There’s also a lot of business meetings which are confidential or sensitive where employees are expected to not take any notes.

@atpfm @caseyliss There is a workaround that I use re: macOS locking on VNC disconnect. Set the Mac up to output to a virtual display and then mirror that virtual display to your physical display (if any). Since that virtual display persists after VNC disconnects, the Mac does not auto lock.

@atpfm this was the mileage on my car while listening to this episode. I have another car with 180,000 and this is the second car I’ve taken to 200,000. I don’t think I ever want to buy a car with less than 100,000 unless it’s a special car that I don’t want to drive daily

To be fair I drive about an hour each way to work. But I’ve been putting miles on my car well before that. I can’t imagine ever justifying getting rid of a car with less than 100,000 except under extenuating circumstances

@atpfm The discussion on cars and mileage really cracked me up. I've bought cars with more mileage (and drove them for years!) than any of you have achieved.

My '07 BMW 328xi currently has like 367,600 km (228,400 miles), and I'm hoping to get a few more years out of it.

It has had some repairs for sure, but no way they are adding up to car payments yet. I bought it for under $5000 CAD, and never had a payment.

@atpfm @siracusa If you send from the same domain through FastMail and Gmail alternately it will probably all end up in spam anyway.

@atpfm regarding the video @siracusa talked about AirPower of HTX, it is real. Is just the video is 4 years old and originally debuted on bilibili (Chinese YouTube), HTX recently started posting their bilibili videos translated to an English language, the original has 40 million views( weibo.com/tv/show/1034:4693377 )

Their videos have crazy production and their latest one about GPU memory even is really worth a view. It’s an explainer on how HBM works. youtu.be/p8UurM1wvvM?is=PruSA1

@atpfm it's probably too late to rename, but Microsoft dropping the Surface Ultra a week before Apple's supposed October event, plus the "names ending in O" makes me more convinced they should go with MacBook Studio for the OLED ones
