@jmillerbiblio when needing someone, I always extend my hand, even if they haven't. When it is another person who is blind, I may quietly say that I have my hand out, and then we just hope for the best. One time, I reached out to shake someone's hand and nearly punched him in the nose. No one in my office bothered to tell me he was in a wheelchair. And naturally, he was my supervisor's supervisor's supervisor, so my embarrassment was pretty intense.

@Lisasali OK Lisa. I have to admit that I giggled a bit at almost punching a person in a wheelchair in the hose while trying to shake his hand. There are some things that just are a bit amusing despite embarrassment.

@Lisasali Funny story. A person I knew (who has since passed away) had really bad personal space issues. He was totally blind. We were at a gathering of all the IL centers in the state at a state park. My friend, who was in a wheelchair, was sitting against the wall of the pavilion sort of in the corner. I was next to him. The person with the personal space issues came up to talk to us after going swimming. He was wearing a very tiny speedo. He moved in front of my friend and his privates were practically touching my friend's face. There was no way Mike could move as he was stuck in the corner. Thankfully someone saw the situation and called the guy over so he would move away from Mike. After the guy was out of earshot my friend just said"I am traumatized." and we completely lost it.
