Subject: New PeerTube feature. Additionally, the latest Status Coup ICE protest video.

N1. I've patched PeerTube 8 to add a new feature that's missing from most PeerTubes. In my version of the system, you can search for videos that match either all tags in a list or videos that match any tag in the list.

So, to see Status Coup videos on my PeerTube, you can go to the following page and enter STATUS COUP in the top [all] search box. To see either Stephen Colbert or Star Trek videos, you can enter COLBERT TREK in the bottom [any] search box.

The attached screenshot shows exactly this test in operation. To see a larger and more readable version of the screenshot, right-click on the image and select "Load image in new tab". [The steps may be different in your browser.]

If you try out this site, allow about 10 seconds for a selected video to start playing.

N2. @peertube and @MakerTube : Would you like to have the "Search tags" patch after it's stable? Note: I understand that plug-ins as opposed to patches are recommended. However, I've only been able to make this work so far using core changes. Perhaps the patch could be the start of a comparable plug-in.

@TheZeldaZone : To respond to your PeerTube question: PeerTube is nice from a technical perspective. About the viewership part, if you post PeerTube video links in your Mastodon feed, the videos will play there. So, your Mastodon followers will see them. Your followers will able to subscribe directly to the video feed as well. If you're looking for a setup where videos are going to go viral, it's unlikely.

    N3. Mission statement:

My PeerTube is a proof of concept for public-interest video hosting. The idea is to demonstrate an alternative to YouTube for videos that might be taken down. For example, my site mirrors the Stephen Colbert "Monroe" video, the censored 60 Minutes "CECOT" segment, and some of the Status Coup ICE protest videos.

Three key points are that PeerTube instances are able to offer Download buttons, a no-ad experience, and resistance to takedowns. Note: The first two points are the decision of the site owner. The last point depends on jurisdiction. In my case, I've moved my PeerTube to a no-DMCA host in Europe.

@FediVideo : If the idea is of interest, the home page is:

    N4. Details for technical readers:

This is a broadcast-only [no registration for now] PeerTube 8.2 instance running on a small dedi box located in Europe. The focus is on curated videos with some attention to public-interest videos that might be taken down elsewhere. Downloads are enabled and, for potentially censored videos, encouraged.

Video playback is fast enough, so far, despite the Europe location. However, initial video loads and manual seeks are slow. If the instance works out, the hardware and network may be upgraded.

The distro is Debian 13 Trixie. RAM is 16 GB. The CPU is an Intel Xeon E3-1240 v3 with 4 cores and 8 threads. The disk is a roughly 900 GB [formatted] SSD.

People who don't expect to host a lot of videos or have a lot of traffic can get by with 8 GB of RAM and 100 GB of SSD. If possible, vCPU should be 4x8 or above. Decent quality VPSes that will work are available for under $10.00 USD per month.

The web server is Angle 1.11.5. Angie is a recommended Nginx spoon that takes care of SSL cert renewal automatically. In a word, "nice". Backups are done by "rclone".

The "Search tags" link mentioned above shows up in the modified PeerTube user interface to the right of the "Browse Videos" link on the horizontal navigation bar. It's in the left-column vertical links panel as well.

The site is down at times for development and backups. I don't have the funds presently to run both Development and Production servers.

N5. The latest Status Coup video [as of May 31, 2026] has been uploaded to my PeerTube. Note: It shows up in the first row of videos in the screenshot. You can watch it at the following link:

Just for fun, I've added a humorous cat video and a restored copy of "The Skeleton Dance" (1929) as well.
