Wring out your dead!

Okay, let me get this straight:

Everyone is using AI for everything.

Everyone hates AI.

AI is terrible at everything, including basic arithmetic and writing code.

AI is better than all humans put together at advanced math and cyberattacks.

Coolcoolcool.

Interviewer: You are the Church's most diligent witch-hunter. What is the basis of your faith in the power of God?

Witch Hunter: Oh, I don't have any faith in that. It's just a bunch of stories and rituals to keep certain men in power.

I: Then why do you hunt witches?

WH: Because their stuff DOES work. They can alter the fabric of reality -- and that's terrifying.

One of the crucial needs in Portland when the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake hits will be communication. With one hour of training, you can be certified to staff a Basic Earthquake Emergency Communication Node (BEECN). Simply passing information via radio between your neighborhood and city emergency managers will save lives.

Is anyone using the Orca screen reader?

If so, does it just not work with Firefox, or am I doing something wrong?

I’m using the mac VoiceOver screenreader. When I navigate to a button in my Godot game, the screenreader recognizes it as such and says:

You are currently on a button. To click this button, press control-option-space.

Those keys don’t press the button. Space does, as does clicking the button with a mouse.

Is there something special I need to do to make a button clickable by VoiceOver?

We've got a test of an audio interface. Feedback from blind players would be appreciated!

Building our first audio interface as sighted devs, we have a new appreciation for why screen reader users play the audio at double speed.

I get to help choose a social chat app for an online computer science education conference. We'd want something that's:

* Free (or at least inexpensive)
* Easy for new users
* Accessible
* Can be used by participants in all countries
* Can handle hundreds of people in the same "room"
* Makes it easy for people to go off into (and find) smaller rooms
* Should probably support audio and/or video chat (although we'll already have Zoom)

Suggestions?

Chapter 4 of @emilymbender and @alex 's The AI Con mentions the 2019 Obermeyer study, which found that a health care needs prediction system discriminates against Black people. The reason: the system was trained on past health care *expenditures*.

Thought-provoking ideas in chapter 2 of @emilymbender and @alex's The AI Con:

- Weizenbaum's ELIZA was meant to show that producing language does NOT imply thought.

- Babies don't learn language from passive exposure, so whatever LLMs are doing is fundamentally different.

- The notion of AGI is tied to the old racist notions associated with IQ tests. (I've thought of the G in AGI as meaning "not limited to a particular task", but rating relative intelligence has this issue.)
