Dear Gazans,

I am getting tagged by more people in need than I can handle, so from now on, I'll mute anybody who tags me.

I will still continue support via @gaza_verified_campaigns and posts I see in my timeline normally.

Sorry about that, but I need to take care of my own health too.

For those who are planning to suspend fosstodon, their server is under new management: https://fosstodon.org/@Gina/114425587421432392

It might be worth holding off on any action until the new team has a chance to prove themselves.

#fediblock

If you're bridging to #BlueSky, why not add some instructions to your profile for the folks over there so they'll that there's a bridge to switch on if they want to?

They might not understand what "bridged from..." means.

Then run with:

import_lists.py --config=config.spamlists.toml

Once servers have cleaned up their act, you can remove them from the .csv file and run the script again.

#domain,#severity,#reject_media,#reject_reports,#obfuscate,#public_comment,#private_comment
spamdomain.social,silence,false,false,true,,
anotherspamdomain.social,silence,false,false,true,,

token = "<token>"
server_url = "https://your-instance.social"

# This will be used for retractions, so keep it stable
private_comment = "Temporary spam block"

[[blocklists]]

name = "Temporary spam block"
source = "config.spamlists/spam.csv"

# This is a domain list without any block options, so we provide them here

public_comment = { value = "Temporary spam block, override = "false" }

If you want to use a retractable block list for the current spam wave, use this script: https://mastodon.scot/@gunchleoc/111974599296575736

I'll provide the configuration in follow-up posts

IFTAS is hosting a list for the current spam wave: https://mastodon.iftas.org/@iftas/113273669404917189

And Seirdy has instructions for *oma instances: https://pleroma.envs.net/objects/a98a016a-0378-4620-bcf5-e0e6632a48f7

Scripts to identify abandoned versions of Mastodon and push a blocklist, or automatically manage using ready-made blocklists: https://codeberg.org/GunChleoc/mastodon-scripts/src/branch/main/blocklists

Update:
- fediverse.observer is gone (see https://social.wake.st/@liaizon/117436051843969195), so added fedisea.surf as data source and removed fediverse.observer. Configuring the "source" option is now mandatory for using the find_old_versions.py script.

- Update: New option skip_retractions. Fix skipping bug when there's no yunohost check

To speakers of underrepresented languages: If your language isn't available in Mastodon's posting window and you'd like me to add it, please let me know.

I will need:

1. Locale code https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO_639-1_codes 2-letter ISO 639-1 codes are preferred, and if not available, we can use a 639-3 code instead
2. English name
3. Native name

If your language is small, try not to be too granular re. dialect so that you will get more posts when filtering.

Boosts welcome.

I just wrote a script to autoreport known spam accounts that will sign up on multiple instances with the same username. You can also use this script to autosuspend them.

Check the "config.sample.toml" file for documentation.

For regular execution, stick it in a cronjob. Help with cron expressions: https://crontab.cronhub.io/

Update: Add option for post visibility

#MastoAdmin

.media-gallery__item-thumbnail img:not([alt]),
.audio-player__canvas:not([title]),
.video-player video:not([title]),
.media-gallery__gifv video:not([title])
{
content: "Image has no description";
border: 1px solid red;
box-sizing: border-box;
}

For creating a colored frame around media that have no descriptions, you can use the CSS in my next post below. The setting is in /admin/settings/appearance

This helps people to see at a glance whether they can consider boosting a post without replying with an image description first.

Boosts welcome.

Since #Twitter API access will cost a fee from the 9th of February on, best delete your old Tweets now before the tools might go down due to lack of funds, or because they don't want to give the Musk any money.

Indexing of new hashtags is broken when you're running ElasticSearch on your Mastodon server. https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/20230

Workaround:

Log into your server, then switch to the mastodon user:

su - mastodon

Test the indexing command by running

live/bin/tootctl search deploy --only tags

The command needs to be run regularly. Call

crontab -e

and add the following line for hourly indexing:

0 */1 * * * live/bin/tootctl search deploy --only tags
