At least I now know that what I'm designing is a bunch of giant, wall-mounted, concentric ✨ ring counters ✨ to be implemented using discrete components.
That's knowledge I can carry forward to more effectively find solutions, and I may have actually already found one I can already use, but alas it must wait until the work day ends.
Update!
@MeiLin gave me the search engine shibboleth I needed to find this web page with a lovely and clever transistor circuit that I can try out!
It's even simple enough for me to try to breadboard it!
https://www.dos4ever.com/ring/ring.html
Edit:
... Oh wait this emulated schockley diode circuit requires obscene voltages in order to exceed the avalanche breakdown Vec. I uh... can't use that. I'll need to find other solutions. :x
This circuit would be so much easier to implement if I would just let myself use J/K flip-flops, but:
1. the only cheap ones available are duals in 16-pin packages when I only need one per ring node and each ring node is an independent pcb, and
2. I very explicitly decided that the light at each node MUST be surrounded by a curious cloud of discrete components for the sake of art 😤
Oh gods, I'm gonna have to find resources to study up about resistor-transistor, diode-transistor, and transistor-transistor logic, if I want to be able to implement the round-robin circuit for the Horologium Keplerus using discrete transistors. >.>;;
I guess RFC for links to resources if anybody has useful links that can cut through the less than optimal search engine algorithms that almost only return SEO'd blogs that have no meaningful information?
The fact that filters Just Work™ here on fedi because there is no ranking algorithm to dodge or game by mangling key words or names is a mental health godsend.
Please for the sake of your fellow fedizens, do not mangle names or words and use CWs for current events. There is no algorithm to derank your posts, and people like me can use the tools given to us to tend to our mental health.
Mangling filterable words to get around filters is an incredibly scummy thing to do here. Please don't.
Watching @Loosf build custom wrist watches is so interesting and makes me want to build one of my own even though I don't like to wear wrist watches. 😂
Time for an updated batch of links to the various places I exist! I really need to update all of my profiles to include this lmao
Sampling at a slightly higher rate than Nyquist also eliminates band limiting of high audible frequency components, without taking more samples than absolutely necessary.
The CDDA format also has 16 bits of dynamic range, which allows for FAR smaller steps in dynamic level than the human ear can perceive, with a noise floor so low it may as well be dead silence.
The CDDA format is optimized to pack perceptibly lossless audio into as little digital data as necessary.
Fun random fact: the sample rate of Audio CD format is 44100Hz. The Nyquist frequency for audible sound is roughly double the upper limit of human hearing, which is 20kHz.
So why is the CDDA sample rate more than 40kHz, but only a little bit more?
The prime factorization of 44100 is 2^2•3^2•5^2•7^2, which gives a LOT of options for computationally cheap downsampling and playback speed reduction. 😁
Edit: See replies for more reasons this sample rate was chosen! 💙
Legit I cannot see this going over well given how many people in this world are on metered or unreliable internet connections. The only time it makes sense to netboot a computer is if it is part of an always connected, centrally managed enterprise system like a university or a corporate office.
What I see in this is Microsoft considering setting their customer base up for further exploitation by expanding their SaaS walled garden to include the freaking operating system and that's not on.
Microsoft is considering making the most compelling pro-Linux advertisement yet

Here we go. A more comprehensive list of links to profiles, pages, places, and spaces I call my own. Have fun perusing.
