"Music is so relaxing and the percussion instruments make the accents of the different rhythms so easy to listen to that you should have no difficulty in keeping time..."

Thin Layer Of Life (2026)

(I love scenes like this, exposing just how thin and fragile this carpet of life is in the high mountains, considering the ages/centuries, the obstacles it took to overcome and the relationships needing to form for this varied life to get and retain its temporary foothold here... It's inspiring and very symbolic to me)

“Fast tech is the blind spot of the e-waste world. Black Friday and Christmas will bring another enormous wave of electronic toys, decorative lights, mini gadgets, chargers and other inexpensive electronics into our homes. Their low price doesn’t mean they have no environmental cost. We need them to be collected and recycled when they’re no longer in use” — Pascal Leroy, Director General of the WEEE Forum

Relentless AI scrapers pushed DNA Lounge's web hosting bill from $800 to $3,500/month.

That is a $32,000/year cost shift caused entirely by companies training models on their content without permission. AI companies are externalizing their massive training costs onto independent web operators, effectively taxing the independent web to build their proprietary models. 📉

New blog post: "Knowledge refinement in the digital era"

How can computational knowledge move from research into education and general culture?

@lu Oh, very cool/inspirational project and for me personally an instant timewarp back to 2015/16, when I was going down similar avenues (learning ARM/Thumb2 asm, then building several Forth VMs & DSL and a configurable polysynth for STM32). Because I was also teaching workshops about that platform, I ended up mostly using C in the end, but maybe you'll find something relevant in here (there's a whole bunch of filters, effects & operators too):

Some live performances (all audio directly recorded from the STM32):

(Your project is also a great example for how much more simple the entire project & code setup is compared to having to deal with all the HAL stuff on that platform...)

@f4grx

A quick recap of what I'm currently working on: I'm building a subtractive synthesizer on an STM32F446 microcontroller, with all code hand-written in assembly.

The goal is to build a synth expander that is inexpensive, independent from the computer and has enough physical controls to be suitable for live performance.

Part of the motivation for this project is that I didn't want to remain dependent on huge janky software stacks for doing music, especially now that things are quickly ensloppifying. Nor did I want to spend hundreds of euros on a hardware synth (and not learn a single thing about how they actually work in the process).

I've been working on this since May (with large study-related breaks in between) and it can now output a nice sawtooth signal over line out and react to MIDI Note On messages. Next up will be implementing envelope / NoteOff.

I live-toot at #LuBuildsASynth and you can check out the current state at: https://git.sr.ht/~lhinderberger/monosynth

Waterfall Of Raven Rocks

Nearing the end of February, and we hired a guide with a SuperJeep to take us to a remote site.

This swift and voluminous river contains several drops, including Aldeyjarfoss, Goðafoss and Hrafnabjargafoss, the eponymous waterfall.
Its turbulent rapids were choked with ice and capped by snow.
Massive and gorgeous icicles failed to still the foaming flow.

Just published a new helper package https://thi.ng/hiccup-sanitize to cleanup a hiccup component/element/HTML/SVG/XML tree. Supports removing/keeping user-defined attributes and/or elements (and their entire sub-trees).

The obviousness of it all. The waste to come to this most dreary and predictable of conclusions.
