I need work, so this is another idea for how I can do something good for people like you that I care about, and maybe get income for it.
Would you sign up for a subscription providing a bundle of some of our favorite software services?
Top of the list:
Services active on the #Fediverse like #DeltaChat and a #SimpleX relay.
My main personal project has always been trying to build a high-level "Swiss army knife" for #p4p protocols. But maybe I should focus on just *running* them at this point…

This isn't the first time I have considered this, and honestly, I'm kind of convincing myself, here, that now is the time, and this is the thing.
I'd probably start by running #YunoHost (which seems to have a few VPN offerings https://apps.yunohost.org/catalog?search=vpn ) and seeing who signs up and what we want.

It would be free to sign up, and you'd get a few accounts bundled with each subscription, because #polyamory doesn't require everyone to be technical.

This service would be a way to have one identity connected to all the different #p4p communities. Including #ActivityPub (possibly several such services), but also #BlueSky, #Nostr, and many such services.
I'd post votes for which to run. I'd host groups in each, eg: a #SimpleX chat for members.
There are a lot of interesting things to try, and essentially, the service is: making it easy to try them.

Vibe-coding alternatives to fascist software projects https://substrate.dougbelshaw.com/vibe-coding-alternatives-to-fascist-software-projects

I signed up for a new #google account, did not enter in my phone number, and attempted to avoid any association of my phone number with the account, but somehow, when I tried to sign in to gmail, it prompted to "send a verification code" to that phone number. Google literally got my phone number without my consent, without me even knowing it.

Is this draft vague but interesting?
"I am working on a touch-based interface with several UX innovations that would make serious computer usage on a powerful ultraportable linux tablet compelling across many professional disciplines, from business and law to design and development."

#Gallup says young adults have experienced the sharpest reversal in #wellbeing of any age group.

⁍ Thriving among young adults has declined 20 points

well this is a #NoPhone option, certainly.

A Montana mother and daughter are fighting drunk driving by leaving free coffee for people who chose not to drive home from the bar.

Beth McBride’s son, Bobby Dewbre, was killed by a repeat drunk driver on his 21st birthday in 2023 while crossing the street to get a sober ride home. Now, every weekend, McBride and her daughter Carli search for cars left overnight in bar parking lots and leave a $5 coffee gift card with a note telling Bobby’s story.

The idea came to Carli after she noticed frost-covered cars outside a bar one morning and wanted to thank the drivers for making the right call.

Their group, the Montana Bar Fairies, now has 75 volunteers locally, more than 300 sign-ups, and chapters spreading to cities including Las Vegas, Houston, Cleveland, and Washington, D.C.

McBride says recipients have told them the cards made them think, and some have pledged never to drive drunk again. Montana also passed “Bobby’s Law” in 2025, toughening penalties for DUIs that result in death. https://www.today.com/food/news/montana-bar-fairies-fight-drunk-driving-coffee-after-son-death-at-21-rcna601887

"Someone Got Android 16 to Run Smoothly on the Boox Go 7"
implies "someone" could get @GrapheneOS or another rom running on #Boox. I would consider a Palma 3 for a #NoPhone alternative. (I'd need to carry a mobile 5G hotspot, too, but I could make that work. I often carry a bag.)

Going Nophone - yet another form of electronic veganism.

And tbh: I couldn’t do it. https://libreplanet.org/wiki/Going_NoPhone

Not very popular in fediverse but those are just facts.

1. Environmental cost of one bacon cheeseburger

Estimated greenhouse gas emissions, including farming, livestock methane, animal feed, land use, processing, and transportation:

• Beef patty (113 g / ¼ lb): 4.2 kg CO₂e
• Bacon (2 strips): 0.5 kg CO₂e
• Burger bun: 0.1 kg CO₂e
• Lettuce, tomato, and onion: 0.1 kg CO₂e

Total: 4.2 + 0.5 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 4.9 kg CO₂e

These are approximate lifecycle estimates. Cheese, condiments, cooking, and packaging are not separately included.

2. Environmental cost of AI coding agent (Codex)

Assumed electricity emissions: 0.35 kg CO₂ per kWh.

Estimated electricity consumption and emissions over 6 hours:

• Light use: 0.1 kWh × 0.35 = 0.035 kg CO₂
• Moderate coding: 0.5 kWh × 0.35 = 0.175 kg CO₂
• Heavy continuous coding: 1.5 kWh × 0.35 = 0.525 kg CO₂
• Extremely intensive coding: 3.0 kWh × 0.35 = 1.05 kg CO₂

These are illustrative scenarios, not actual Codex measurements. They mainly account for operational electricity, not hardware manufacturing or model training.

okay, trying a quote instead of a boost for, "what do you think?"

boost often/usually means: i want to know what you think
#mastodon feature request: replying to a boost should mention the booster, too

genuinely pleased that engineers are no longer a precious treasure just wish the solution didnt involve so much climate-collapse or planet-scale theft or habitat-destruction or power-centralisation or surveillance-on-steroids or tech-bros.
