That's how @SafeguardingResearch started, on January 15th 2025

Feels like half-a-lifetime-ago already...

Same hard-coded values (5°, 7°, 25°), same variable and function names, same steps, in the same order.
On one side, FairScan (Kotlin, GPL v3). On the other, Ente Locker (Rust): no copyright notice, no mention of FairScan in the file.
And this is just one function. I found similar matches in multiple files.

I'm not a lawyer and may be missing something. If you read code, I'd like to know what you see.

Time again to #WheelOutTheDigitalDarkAgeKlaxon 📯 - Microsoft ends support for #Microsoft #Publisher this month.

Microsoft suggests to just convert any old Publisher files to #PDF, and optionally convert the PDF to MS Word format if you need to edit it 😱:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher/microsoft-publisher-will-no-longer-be-supported-after-october-2026

Luckily @libreoffice comes to the rescue:

Just had a team recap of #iPRES2026. Immediately got reminded of how depressing the keynotes were this year... And also this quote from Sibyl's keynote: "We are born to a dangerous time. Consider that an affliction or consider it an assignment."

Amused by my Google News alert for "new file format" bringing this important article to my attention: https://www.law.com/article/almID/52N5-TPB1-JBYY-24R8-00000-00/ (just 32 years too late!)

The Guardian: 'Did Ukraine’s strikes lead to a decline in Russian disinformation?
Probably not.'

@evacide your case in point:
"Is Zelensky right to say data centre strikes have taken down Russian bots?"

basically: no

We need to talk about AI and math. Most of the breakthroughs this year are counterexamples found by brute search, not theorems built from insight, and understanding that helps us grasp the power and limits of transformer models.
