It seams to me, being a non US citizen, as if POTTER is a fairly fine or normal/OK profession to persue. A proudness in the craftsmanship that is respected and acknowledged. In the States that is.
Over here in Sweden, people working in clay nearly never uses the matching word KRUKMAKARE - literally meaning someone making pots (krukor/pottor). Instead we more often would call ourselves ceramicists or artists. Thrower perhaps.
