The cliffnotes version: Whirl was created during "Functionisim", an era of Cyberton that enforced a strict caste system based on alt mode function. If you were a truck you hauled freight, if you were a car you were a courier , etc. Whirl's mode put him in the aeronautic corps but what he really wanted to do was make watches.

@ami_angelwings What's most interesting about the Spectacular version is that Weisman and Cook were contractility obligate to make a Venom storyline for the accompanying toyline and so had to omit Peter's New York temper in order for his symbiote mode to stand out, so Weisman instead focuses on what tends to get hastily left out in most other adaptations, Peter's entitlement complex.

@ami_angelwings Weisman talks about learning he got the job during a family vacation and immediately heading to the nearest comic store to buy a truck load of Essential Spidey trades to make copious notes for the show, and I fully believe this because his Peter is the kind of adaptation you'd only make if you knew stuff like -this.-

Whirl, from the IDW Transformers More Than Meets the Eye/Lost Light series. Introduced as a Deadpool-esque sociopath, voted "Autobot most likely to defect" he's gradually revealed to be a deeply damaged person. Whirl starts the series saying "If there's one thing I've learned it's how to say goodbye and mean it" and ends it saying "I'm not broken." And meaning it.

@ami_angelwings@urusai.social My favourite character beginning with J is the famous James T. Kirk, youngest captain in Starfleet and known "stack of books with legs". I admire his focus, his dedication and capacity to make difficult decisions, and the resolve that enables him to consistently prioritise the safety of the crew in his care and their mission over all manner of temptation, romantic or otherwise. Kirk always tries to find a peaceful solution, even when the logical response (as advocated by Spock on multiple occasions) is violence, even when he himself wants violence and even when he must put the Enterprise and its crew, shown so many times as so precious to him, on the line to give peace that chance. The man who would rather find common ground with the horta than exterminate it. The man who would give his own life rather than surrender his ship to an enemy. And the man who would leave his ship vulnerable to destruction by an only recently former enemy, rather than fight back and guarantee a war on the threshold to an end of enmity.

Star Trek left me with an unfortunately overinflated expectation for the level of maturity I could expect from the adult world. But I keep on hoping.

However I'm also going to post a runner-up, who would have been my pick for a different letter if they hadn't been bumped when I realised they had a first name I'd forgotten about. #FavCharacterAtoZ, #FavCharacterJ

@ami_angelwings@urusai.social For C I had just one character in mind, at least until I was reminded his given name is actually John. Childermass, of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norell, by Susanna Clarke, is the personal servant and agent Mr Norell, who is known as the first and only English magician in centuries and wants to keep it that way. Although much of the surface tension focuses on the rivalry between Norell and Strange, England's second magician, we also soon learn that Childermass has picked up a certain fluency with magic in the course of his service and perhaps access to Norrell's private library. And yet he is not supposed to be counted as a magician—because he is a servant and not a gentleman?

Of course this doesn't go unnoticed and after loyally resisting efforts to lure him away he does eventually break with the peevish, petulant Norell and claim his own place as a magician and part of the return of magic to England.

But really, ultimately, Childermass is my favourite for the moment of awe near the end, where he encounters what was almost certainly the Raven King.

@ami_angelwings@urusai.social I had the hardest time choosing characters for K and L. Nearly stalled out entirely. Fortunately there are a few with multiple qualifying names, so for K my favourite character is Kal-El, better known by the moniker Superman and whom I cannot choose for C or S.

I can't say I was a huge fan of his in the past. But a combination of seeing other people talk about how much he means to them over the years, and of two years playing in a DC supervillain RP as a character who genuinely admired him (The Fabulous Faye had plans to borrow his identity, to mimic his powers with her own, and generally to fuck with Kal-El because she considered him far more worthy of emulation than the Batman she most frequently faced off against—for his part Kal-El seemed to consider her a nuisance(affectionate), tending to drop her off on her villainous allies' doorstep like a stray cat).

Anyway. Kal-El invites us to consider the question of what we would do if we were more powerful than anyone, if we could do, effectively, anything we chose to do. And maybe, just maybe, we would use that power to be good, to be kind, and to endlessly, endlessly, find something in humanity to love and to protect. And maybe we don't even need to be bulletproof, maybe we don't need to be more powerful than a locomotive or leap tall buildings in a single bound. Maybe we could be kind and do good to each other anyway.

That said, I also want to toss in an honourable mention to Korendir, of Janny Wurts' novel The Master of Whitestone. It's been a very long time since I read this novel and it has greatly faded in my memory. Nonetheless, he still pings in my mind as one of those characters with seemingly endless wells of determination and inventiveness to draw upon, who from the outside show a nigh-impenetrable mask and in their impenetrability invite you to wonder what drives him. I have a bit of a soft spot for those, and I think it's time for a reread. #FavCharacterAtoZ, #FavCharacterK

M, the letter of brothers.

I was tempted to choose between Maedhros and Maglor, the two sons of Fëanor who most regretted swearing that oath yet still were driven by it to terrible deeds. They attacked Elrond's parents for a silmaril and took him and his brother captive, and soon thereafter stole the remaining two from the army of the Valar after Morgoth had been defeated, only to find for all the wickedness they had been party to they could no longer keep them. Maedhros, who had lost his hand escaping Morgoth, killed himself with a dive into magma, while Maglor wandered the coasts after throwing his away and singing sad songs.

But! Rather than choose between those two I shall pick Sherlock Holmes' famous foil, his intellectual rival, Mycroft. Ever since I read the stories I was fascinated by the notion that the great Sherlock Holmes had a brother who was more perceptive, more keenly deductive than himself, yet who did not make such an impact on the world because he would rather idle his days in his comfortable club than go out proving it.

And, yes, it is said that he did tremendous work for the British government, or even in moments of crisis was the British government. But how does he solve those governmental problems? Why, he tasks them out to his little brother, when I always believed he privately had the solution in mind but would rather give the puzzle to Sherlock than to bestir himself over it.

An intriguing figure. I like to imagine he prefigured the later pattern of Nero Wolfe and his legman Archie Goodwin. #FavCharacterAtoZ, #FavCharacterM
