“I used to do everything on cotton paper using brushes and pencils. For a few clients I still do watercolor ink splatters, collages, and inked illustrations. But for this project my iPad Pro and Apple Pencil were just right. Using these tools definitely saved me time, as I didn’t have to scan any physical drawings and then clean up the many options—which was good, because I could just go on drawing idea after idea and swash after swash. I always first draw a lot to get out a feeling, then I whittle it down to what I think matters the most and best fits the project.” — @laureola

Gathered from the pages of Lettres Décoratives (https://letterformarchive.org/shop/lettres-decoratives/), our latest postcard collection takes to the streets of nineteenth-century Paris with a glamorous assortment of show-stopping signs and storefronts. The original lettering and illustration for the packaging and postcard backs of Boutiques Magnifiques is a product of a rich collaboration with contemporary illustrator and lettering artist Laura Serra (@laureola). Publisher Lucie Parker speaks with the Oakland-based designer about the process and her long-term romance with art nouveau.

Jon Sueda: Brainstorming.

Martin Venezky: You know how I hate that word. Some people are great at this. They are usually the loud, clever ones. That’s not me. I would rather “material-storm,” that is, gather objects, materials, pictures, and begin intersecting them to see what happens. I like to observe rather than imagine, and that’s when most of my ideas come to me.

Most printed ephemera wasn't intended to last.

Writer & book artist Eve Scarborough shares what she's learned cataloging type ephemera at Letterform Archive, where fragile paper goods preserve the fingerprints, doodles, & traces of the people who made and used them.
