My ancestor James George Noulton was baptised on 8 Nov 1788 at St Mary’s, Lambeth. His parents were George Noulton, a waterman on the River Thames, and Mary Foster.

On 6 October 1808, James looked set to follow the family tradition and learn a waterman’s skills from his father, George. However, on 23 November 1808, James found himself on board HMS Cornelia. Instead of sailing the Thames, he was about to sail the world. Was this abrupt change of career James’ decision, or was he press-ganged?

In regard to the Noultons, members of the Arthur family were also teachers, and the ties became even stronger when Noulton sons married Arthur daughters.

However, as this thread will reveal, the Noultons of Lambeth were more than just watermen and lightermen - they fought in the Napoleonic Wars and reached great heights as sportsmen.

Meet my Noulton ancestors. Meet James George and William Henry “Paddy” Noulton.

Lambeth was a major hub for watermen due to the presence of the Lambeth Stairs (near Lambeth Palace) and the heavily industrialised waterfronts lined with timber yards, potteries and stone wharves. It was a notoriously tight-knit community. The trade was strongly hereditary, passed down from grandfathers to fathers, fathers to sons, and uncles to nephews, through demanding seven-year apprenticeships.

In the 1800s, Noulton was a prominent and highly respected name among the Thames watermen and lightermen. Members of the family were deeply entrenched in the historic maritime trade of London, transporting passengers (as watermen) and unloading or moving cargo via flat-bottomed barges (as lightermen). By the 1800s, most men working the River Thames held bindings and licenses for both trades, and were strictly governed by the Company of Watermen and Lightermen.
