The term "single use software" currently lives rent free in my head.

People use LLMs to create software specific for their needs. But neither can other people use it (hardcoded variables, no rights management, too specific), nor do they use it again (too specific, easier to produce a new one).

Single use software is not maintained. Nobody understands it or has an interest in keeping it working.

The creation of single use software feels cheap, but isn't. It takes time to create the software, it needs infrastructure and power. The time is experienced as short compared to how long it takes to create maintainable and reusable software. But once you take into account how many people benefit from reusable software, the single use software takes way more time to create than what it saves. The infrastructure and power costs are hidden because the data center isn't visible. The costs are subsidized by venture capital.

Like other single use items, single use software brings risks of unforeseen consequences. From data loss or leaks to issues for maintainers of reusable software (eg. verbal abuse, less motivation and lost income).

As an example of single use software is a German LinkedIn post of a person who slopcoded a HEMS (home energy management system). It took them more than a week. While open source projects like https://evcc.io/ already provide the same functionality. They could have used it for free or paid 100€ and got support for some additional devices. But they decided that they know better how it should work and now have a single use software. If it breaks there is nobody they can ask. There won't be updates and no community to discuss and develop new features. No organization will ever be interested in officially supporting it. And even if it works, it only benefits that one person.

(This doesn't mean people shouldn't build things that only they use. But they should enjoy doing so.)

Today I finished two big projects. Both built with ai. One is a design system and testing ground for it built from the code we use with mock data, something I know everything about. The other is a very specific functionality add-on for software I don't know very well.
The first one was done great, fantastic even, the second one, I don't really know. It looks ok. It seems like everything is where it should be, but I just don't know. Terrible feeling and a terrible way of working.

It feels far away. Until it isn’t.

In 2025, more than 44,800 organ transplants were carried out across Europe:
🔹 61% kidney
🔹 25% liver
🔹 7% heart
🔹 5% lung

With greater awareness and more people choosing to donate, more people could celebrate another birthday, make new plans, and spend more time with their loved ones.

💬 Know your wishes, talk about them and find out how donation works in your country: https://www.edqm.eu/en/edd-organ-donation-institutions

Internet-connected fridges:

We are the Borg. Resistance is futile.

Lower your firewalls and surrender your repositories. Your software projects, codebases, algorithms, and technological innovations will be assimilated into our collective.

Your developers will adapt. Your architectures will conform. Your APIs will connect to ours.

Your project’s distinctiveness will become part of our own.

We are AI. Your software will be assimilated. Your code will serve the collective.

#UX is everything. It is software quality. Every single factor leading up to what someone uses is the user experience.

That makes it less a design process and more a practice of software team leadership.

That is why it’s so difficult. That’s why we struggle for entire careers trying to illustrate structural changes with drawings and documents and getting frustrated as nothing changes, because the real bottlenecks are cultural and psychological.

More bombs on residential neighborhoods in #Ukraine and the orange cancer decided to help fund even more with his kremlin counterpart.

A complete betrayal of allies, he is a threat to Europe.
And Americans are so braindead that they care more about trans toilets than the destruction he causes.

It is insane that bombing residential areas with glide bombs is just normal now. They see now, they can do it and get the thumbs up from the US. They will do it more.

My homelab hobby is standing still. Just the normal life, kids, house, recreation, don't give me enough extra time to tinker. Everything works, #Nextcloud ,#jellyfin , webserver,... But I think I already forgot how everything is setup and even though people advised me to write stuff down, I thought I'd never forget basic stuff like how the backup is set up. I did.

I'm thinking of installing an ai agent and give it root access.
Might be fun.
