Think Like a Vegan: Ep.37: Beyond Appeasement: Finding our Ethical Spine

edits: description and tags

<💬>
We need more vegans. We need strategies. But for these to stick, it's the context we must transform. That requires courage. In 1950, Leslie Cross, a Vegan Society founder, wrote veganism was a liberatory movement. This July, the European Court of Human Rights affirmed ethical veganism as a protected belief under Article 9 as not a lifestyle choice, but a serious moral conviction. Courage gets recognised.

Dreaming Against the Machine: Episode 24: The Myth of AI Doom, with Cal Newport

"Do you want to be the chicken or do you want to be the dodo* bird?" this is the resistance is futile, slogan coming from the AI Bros. What they are really concerned about is adding another rung on the hierarchy. They are not altruists. This is more like transpeciecism.

edit: dodo (autocorrect bug)

Well, this is obviously shitty sci-fi, but it's important to observe the meta of it. The world building, the frameworks these make up the medium which fits the world view. It's fascism. Do you never wonder what they are accelerating?

What they captured is the reality faced by 200, 000 mother pigs every year."

"Why the right resists veg(etari)anism: Ideological commitment to consuming animal products"

<📄>
Public and scholarly discourses have long emphasized the unique symbolic status of meat, expressing strength, cultural traditions, and dominance, and thus values that resonate with right-wing adherents (Adams, 1990; Choma et al., 2024; Dhont & Hodson, 2014; Joy, 2010; Michielsen & van der Horst, 2022). This narrow focus on meat, however, might have contributed to the impression that meat holds a unique ideological role in dietary behavior. Our findings challenge this idea by demonstrating that right-wing adherents (those higher in SDO or RWA) express greater commitment not just to meat consumption but to a broader range of animal products, including dairy, eggs, and fish. Clearly, ideologically motivated commitment to animal product consumption extends beyond meat (Dhont & Hodson, 2014; Stanley, 2022), and is evident among consumers of dairy, egg, and fish, including not only omnivores, but also flexitarians, pescatarians, and vegetarians.
</📄>

..

<📄>
Vegans and animal advocates are often portrayed as moralistic or condescending, which can elicit psychological resistance to perceived threats to personal choice, particularly among right-wing adherents (Aloni et al., 2024; De Groeve et al., 2022; Gregson et al., 2024). Our findings suggest that, much like meat consumption, dairy, egg, and fish consumption may hold a symbolic meaning reflecting dominance-and tradition-based values and serve as a form of pushback against ideologies that challenge animal product consumption (i.e., veg(etari)anism). Indeed, consistent with Dhont and Hodson's (2014) findings, right-wing ideologies predicted commitment to animal product consumption through perceived veg(etari)anism threat (for both SDO and RWA effects), and human supremacy beliefs (for SDO effects). By demonstrating these dual pathways, our findings align with the dual process model of ideology and prejudice (Duckitt & Sibley, 2010; Judge & Wilson, 2019) yet also reveal that the relevance of ideological dispositions in dietary attitudes and behaviors is more far-reaching than previously understood.

"CDC confirms cat-to-human transmission of avian influenza"

<🙀>
Last spring, investigators with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) interviewed individuals who had been exposed to HPAI-infected pet cats that consumed raw animal products.

...

The 19 cats in the study all had become sick after consuming commercially purchased raw milk, raw meat, or raw pet food between November 2024 and January 2025. Nine cats were tested and all came back positive for H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b, genotype B3.13, which is also what most human H5N1 infections have involved. The remaining cases were detected through veterinarian reports, commercial laboratory reports, or routine influenza A reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing of brain tissue from euthanized cats.

Conflict, violence, and warfare among early farmers in Northwestern Europe https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2209481119

"This paper explores the key role bioarchaeology plays in creating meaningful perspectives on human conflict and the emergence of warfare in Neolithic Europe. Skeletal datasets are considered in the context of social, economic, and demographic changes that accompanied the shift to a sedentary farming economy. Increasing competition and inequality are key factors that fostered the emergence of larger-scale human conflict and warfare. Beyond numbers, these insights should allow for more significant engagement with the unique experiential qualities of violence in prehistory."

#pastoralism #conflict #capitalism #inequality

"While “successful” foragers can only share the benefits of their efforts in the short term and with a few individuals, successful farmers can accumulate material wealth in the form of cleared land and livestock that both permit and promote ever larger family sizes. These new forms of wealth were also heritable, meaning that emerging wealth disparities could grow wider across multiple generations. The emergence of “wealthy” individuals, especially in more pastoralist groups, will also have created conditions that favored polygamy––some individual males were now able to support more than one spouse. This change would further increase inequality by producing powerful patriarchs at the head of increasingly large families while also disenfranchising other males who might be unable to marry. The former hypothesis appears to be borne out by the recent aDNA study of remains from Hazleton North chambered tomb, southwest England (83), where a single male progenitor had reproduced with four women to produce a five-generation family, with female exogamy. The combination of material, social, and reproductive inequalities created by the conditions arising from domestication contrasts with former egalitarian perceptions of the Neolithic. These new inequalities would be sufficient to account for both the motivations behind the forms of intergroup violence now prevalent and also the form of such interactions with raiding and the abduction of women as apparent among repeated mass burials, now a recurring feature of intergroup hostilities."
