When the column said the police released a picture of a man “on X,” my first reaction was “X? WTF is X?” And then I remembered.

Wyatt Gallagherwedgius@m.wedgi.usAug 30, 2023, 7:26 PM@daringfireball i was working for a student paper in 2007. waking up to the news from virginia tech was a sobering moment for us, and i'm sure for every other college newsroom. we talked about our role in crisis communication, and i set up a rudimentary system for switching our site to an emergency mode that thankfully was never needed.
the dth was one of several student papers i admired from afar back then. today they have done excellent, brave work.

While this is striking visually, it feels to me like listening in on the cockpit voice recorder of a flight going down. These people know their end is near and there’s not much they can do to change the outcome.
