@zzt Hey, just to clear this situation up:

We received the donation out of the blue with no knowledge of who these people are. We don't have any communication with them and don't know what (if anything) they want from us. Maybe they just want more traffic to their site, which is mostly about software.

Our rule is donations cannot come with restrictions/requirements/influence other than we add a logo to our site. They requested this. At the moment we have to follow our own bureaucratic rules.

Another domino falls.

Microsoft just pulled out of a massive datacenter deal with Nscale in the UK, taking out up to 40% of Nscale’s potential contractual income (the article doesn’t state how much the UK contract was worth)…just in time for Nscale’s IPO. Microsoft’s reason for cancelling the deal was that Nscale couldn’t get enough power plants to be built in time to power its UK data center, but that could just be the justification Microsoft decided to offer up for its foregone decision to bail.

I’m still of the opinion that natural gas appliances should be completely prohibited for new buildings, and required to be replaced with something else at the next renovation.

That shit is needlessly dangerous, bad for the environment, and in use it’s not even cheaper than alternatives. Every goddamn winter I have to listen to motherfuckers complain about “oh will we have enough national gas reserves to continue boycotting russian gas” and I’m just like, you shouldn’t be overly reliant on imported goods anyway, and this one doesn’t even have a good excuse attached to it.

District heating and inductive stoves*. Fucking get on it, europe.

Pigs really can fly, the moon is made of cheese and Wine now runs on #OpenBSD! :flan_cool:

Largely made possible by the work of Andrii (NethIafin), fabien@, and thfr@, 64-bit Windows applications (yes, games) run on -current!

Three pieces of advice:

1. Whether or not AI "works," for some nebulous version of "works," isn't the crux of the ethical argument.
2. When AI seems to "work," remember that slopbros are lying liars who lie. Don't fall for sleight of hand.
3. When AI seems to "work," ask what hard tasks are getting swept under the rug, what you're not seeing in slopware demos.

The onslop of bullshit generators shoved in our faces is a conspiracy pushed by a rape cult in an effort to erase the concept of "no" from public discourse.

Making a safe space for people who refuse bullshit generators means no tolerance in the space for usage of bullshit generators. No means no, no exceptions.

When they posted their Hot Take About AI (https://sfconservancy.org/llm-gen-ai/llm-backed-generative-ai-recommendations.html), I thought it was misguided but didn't really have the bandwidth to care. But after seeing bkuhn harass someone over criticism, I'm disgusted with the organization.

Posters on random street poles are exhibiting stronger leadership than Slopware Freedom Conservancy.

In a world where the biggest companies in the world are getting away with not even respecting the most basic copyright license requirement of attribution, imagine thinking that the solution is a new copyright license.

Liberals crack me the fuck up. For allllll that peace policing and No Kings STILL got literally censored in real time by the Zionist class.

LMAO

Massive Ls

First they came for BLM & Palestinians and I was like "should have done it the right way"

Then they came for No Kings and I was like "what the fuck?"

@NanoRaptor Apple’s shift from files to hidden app-database makes backup/restore very difficult

This is your occasional backup reminder - if you haven’t yet, go start setting up backups of any kind.

If you think you don’t need backups, delete everything you have on the device you’re using right now.

If that seems like a bad idea then you need backups.

interestingly (from asking around), netbsd's zfs implementation is one of the few that isn't downstream of openzfs, which was a bad thing in our view up until it turned out openzfs accepts LLM code, at which point it started to seem like probably a good thing

this wikipedia "Did you know" entry seems relevant to some people's interests on here

Tech events I get invited to speak at: "succeeding as a woman in tech"

Tech events I'd like to get invited to speak at: "succeeding as a creative weirdo in tech who keeps having strange side projects run away on them and wants to scale impact while staying weird"

new tech gender option: open source maintainer with an interest in community-led joy & chaos 😅

If you dislike AI please stop saying that AI can code now. AI can't fucking code. Just because it can generate code that works for some very loose definition of the word works doesn't mean it can code because coding is so much more than that. Please, I'm begging you, you do not, under any circumstances, gotta hand it to them

@madrobotblog

"If AI answers are Google’s own statements, Google carries a publisher’s responsibility for every false claim its AI makes about a real person or company, at least in Germany, and every refused takedown request becomes evidence against it. Two courts have now said so, and by settling in Munich Google has, for now, kept the question away from a court whose ruling would bind them"
