Our UK colleagues continue their fight for union recognition. After months of negotiations, the question of who should be included in the bargaining unit is now going to the UK's Central Arbitration Committee. The latest update from the WWU-UK Branch:

It’s official: WWU-US/CWA is now certified to represent eligible Wikimedia Foundation workers in the U.S.

On September 17, the NLRB issued the Certification of Representative:

52 days after WMF declined voluntary recognition, U.S. recognition is complete. Next: bargaining, with the needs of staff around the world in focus.

UK recognition continues. Different countries. Different legal paths. One movement in true solidarity.

Check out this WIRED piece capturing so much of why WWU organized: https://www.wired.com/story/wikipedia-workers-vote-on-whether-to-unionize/

WMF US workers voted 158–14 to unionize, but this was never primarily about pay or benefits. It was about something more fundamental: a seat at the table as Wikimedia navigates major organizational and technological change.

We’re proud of what our workers built, grateful for the solidarity that got us here, and ready for what's next: including standing with our UK siblings as they pursue recognition 🌍

WE DID IT. WE WON. 💜✊

Wikimedia Foundation workers voted 158 YES to 14 NO: 91.9% of ballots cast, with 81% turnout.

We’re so proud of everyone who built this union, and this win belongs to our whole community. We could not have done it without the solidarity of Wikimedia volunteers.

This is just the beginning. We stand with our UK siblings in their recognition process now, and with future organizing efforts across WMF’s global workforce. 🌍

“Even if every single staff member were currently being treated fairly and well by their management chain, the formation of the union is to ensure that things can stay that way even when new managers are hired or promoted, and as the tech industry changes rapidly around us.” - WMF worker, name withheld

“I dream of a global union of Wikimedia workers that includes every country in which we are. A global union would be analogous to the growth of the editing communities and of Wikipedia itself these past 25 years: collective action on a global scale, to the benefit of all.” - WMF worker, name withheld

It’s September 1: the start of Labor Month!

Wikimedia volunteers have launched a creative and deeply Wikimedian way to stand in solidarity with Wiki Workers United and workers organizing across borders: a month-long campaign to create, translate, and improve Wikipedia articles about organized labor and workers’ rights. 🌍✊

WWU is incredibly humbled and grateful for this support. Join the campaign: https://w.wiki/Tu5r

Together, we make knowledge a tool for solidarity. 🙏

“Wikipedia is the most important website in the world. It’s under constant attack from criminals, and nation states, and needs support and protection. Wikimedia staff are crucial for keeping Wikipedia alive and operational. They also need support and protection. A very basic aspect of that is forming a labor union.” — Lars Wirzenius, Former WMF staff and free software developer
