I am sure plenty resent Big AI companies calling themselves 'labs'.
So was I, until I realised this was as in meth, not research.

We can now comfortably use the term with this explainer: "Anthropic, a leading AI lab (as in meth, not research), today published..."
@MrBerard neighbors evacuated as AI lab discovered in backyard shed
Hahah, I spit out my coffee.
I do read of GPU boxes called 'home labs'.
'Is your neighbour's suspiciously warm and emitting a persistent hum? They may be running an AI lab in their basement. Call this number ..'
@MrBerard @azonenberg Homelabbing in general means just DIY tech and tinkering with it. I've been thinking of building a small server computer to put under my bed for a personal cloud. Plenty of smaller mastodon servers for example are also physically located on similar machines.
I know, I know, but this, or my cousin's father refereeing to his academic teams in the Humanities as a 'lab' makes some of the more traditional, natural scientists twitch a bit, you see why?
