The somewhat comedically presented hazard controls chart has exploded, spawned questions indicating there are many people who are unaware that safety and resilience engineering are a thing, and apparently, a thread in which someone is seriously offering to go in depth into the latest models and reasoning.

I stand by sharing it though because the reality is that it's a very approachable first pass at the problem and most people aren't even aware they should be thinking about it at all, like if they have literally any job that impacts or involves people. Not everyone can be a process engineer but making sure everyone has a basic intuition for when you are handling a hazard in an ass backward way is how you avoid getting people killed.

I am curious though as to why the chart itself is said to be misleading, so I will passively watch that thread unfold.

It's definitely not remotely close to a complete picture but the thrust of it is basically correct: the more impossible you make contact with the hazard, the better. Telling people "don't touch that" is second to most dangerous and just sending them in there to touch it while suited up is the most dangerous.

Getting rid of it altogether makes contact with it impossible, replacing it with something that is harder to hurt yourself on or keeping everyone physically away is next down. Engineering controls are below all these because by definition they don't work passively, so if things like mutual exclusion lockouts and alarm systems fail for any reason, you're also boned.

I think that if someone came away from this chart thinking "ah, so if I have administrative controls I don't need PPE" they're missing something more fundamental regarding redundancy and emergency preparedness in general.

@somebody I use this when explaining the usefulness (or rather lack of) of phishing awareness to people. It's mind boggling how we just keep working with either PPE or just "educating people" jfc
