The em dash, like the semicolon, is an excellent tool for structuring the flow of a sentence — it helps to organize complex sequences of ideas in a comprehensible way, almost as if the written words were conversation.
Bringing disrepute upon the em dash is not the worst crime of AI, but it is a crime. I used to think that the people who campaign for the Oxford comma all the time were a bit silly, but now maybe I understand them better. This is a cause worth fighting for.
