i think you have to ask yourself why, in the year 2026, a politician would propose giving your photo id to a third party as a digital harm reduction measure

One of the hardest things about being a Gen X geek is remembering the promise of technology, watching it emerge, but then watching that promise and evolution get kicked aside in the name of profits and subsequent enshittification.

I don't know how to explain to Democratic leadership that trans people just do deserve the right to exist without abuse. "We shouldn't abuse trans people because what if a cis person also gets abused" isn't the shining example of inclusion that you think it is.

Flip: "When I grow up... I want to be a police officer..."

Me: 😳 "Oh? Why's that?"

Flip: "As a guise... to arrest... Christopher Luxon."

"'You go in there and see an avocado for $3, and next week you go in and it’s $5. It’s just not sustainable,' he said.

The rising cost of fresh produce had forced Arnold and his wife to reconsider some purchases, such as peppers, because they had become too expensive."

I'm not denying that the cost-of-living:income ratio is appalling and if they were complaining about the cost of carrots or apples or other things that usually store pretty well so are less seasonal, I'd be pretty sympathetic.

But I don't understand how a couple can get to retirement age without noticing that the price of avocados varies from week to week and that [presumably bell] peppers aren't always affordable. I too love red capsicums! But I've never in my life dreamed of trying to buy one in *spring*. Next minute they'll be complaining about the price of strawberries in mid-winter.

I feel like the government needs to overhaul the curriculum again and make sure everyone gets an hour a day learning how crops work.

"Therapy is to blame for this" say the people who are the cause of the therapy.

@ewenmcneill @stephen That's what I've seen too.
Pfizer has been granted FDA approval for the latest vaccine variant end of August:

If you look up Comirnaty on Medsafe, it seems the current LP. 8.1 was approved here end of Oct 2025.

You could just check with your pharmacy. They may know when a new vaccine arrives. Alternatively, email Medsafe...?

I've been doing some volunteer work transcribing submissions on the Homosexual Law Reform Bill in 1985. It's striking how many subs supporting the bill speak about the difficulty in finding a community of peers under such an oppressive regime

Makes me think about banning under 16s from social media

If you want to escape for a while, I recommend joining Joseph Ricketts in this freshwater spring in the Ocklawaha river, Florida, looking for giant tadpoles. Joseph makes wonderful underwater natural history videos with his own camera work and he plays the music too. It’s the real thing.

There have been sea lions - 1 to 3 at a time - hanging out at the small local beach often over the past couple of months. The Department of Conservation recently added signs to alert people. It’s a good idea, since there are plenty of passers by on the cycle way or in camper vans and I guess many are unfamiliar with these creatures! Local dog walkers should already know what to do.

Such a treat to see these animals on a regular basis, sometimes cuddled up together for a snooze 🥰

Dropped the car off at Honda for WOF and service. Stopping at bus interchange on the way home to pick up a Motu Move card, because it's replacing MetroCard soon.

I guess Gizmodo are just giving their readers what they want.

@ajroach42 and, as the old saying goes: at some point, things transition from "bootlegs" to "the only surviving copies"
