I would really like a job where I am not forced to use LLMs. I've been looking for months now without much luck. Someone please help hook me up. It's gotta be remote (I'm in US Eastern Time). My current job title is Senior Software Engineer but I can do all sorts of computer and math things. Hit me with some way I can do good for the world while paying my bills.
It's that time of year again: time for me to ask for advice on how to spend the money my employer offers for "learning and development". I've got a few hundred bucks available, but it's gotta get approved by a manager person. What should I try to convince them on? I've done a bunch of books in the past (that I've still not gotten around to reading), and some electronics project things (most of which are gathering dust on a shelf now)... is there something that I'll actually get real use out of? Would love some suggestions.
Boosts welcome because I have no idea how to tag this to get eyes on it.
I've been seeing a lot of articles lately about Starbucks closing lots of stores around the country; has anybody gone through and looked at correlations between which locations are being shut down and which locations have unionized? Just kinda curious, ya know?
I hear a lot of talk of the mythical "hoodie weather" but I don't know what that actually means. What is "hoodie weather" to you? What temperature? Humidity? Etc.?
Remember that time Israel planted bombs in a bunch of pagers and walkie talkies and then indiscriminately maimed and murdered a bunch of people it baselessly claimed were terrorists including multiple small children?
That's worth remembering, imo.

I have a pair of almost-identical-looking jagged scars on my wrists. I acquired them many thousands of miles and several years apart under very different circumstances, neither of which involved self harm or intentional violence of any sort. Just pure coincidental, accidental injuries that left scars on my wrists. It's much cooler and more mysterious if I don't explain it lol. That said, I'm bored and have spent most of the past 5 days on the toilet, so I'll explain it if anybody expresses interest 💩
If you get sad in the game you get sad in real life
(I make no promises that my opinions will be interesting or controversial.)
Real spicy take hour. Name any issue of your choosing between now and when I get up to eat dinner and I'll tell you my knee-jerk opinion on the matter.
1. Print out a copy of this picture of Nana Visitor wearing a denim jacket from an episode of MacGyver.
2. Affix it to a steel panel that can be hung on the wall.
3. Place all my tasks onto the panel using magnets, with different zones to represent what stage of progress they're in, etc.
This is my idea for a Jira [Nerys] board.
I have big sadness now.
Fuck people who come in in the last 30 seconds of an online auction and outbid you.

Looking at how few people on @unormal 's leaderboard are participating in this year's #adventofcode, it's a bit dismal. Come back, y'all.
Doing what I want cuz a pirate is free
I want you to help me compile a list: what do you consider to be the most important English-language science fiction TV/movie/game/etc. franchises. Specifically what I'm looking for is science fiction in media that involve actors/actresses.
Let me get the lowest hanging fruit out of the way: Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate, Babylon 5... I guess let's include the various Marvel and DC universes as well.
#scifi #sciencefiction
#startrek #starwars #stargate #babylon5
#marvel #dc
(It's me. I'm the one who says that.)
One of my faves is Henry the Pole-Vaulting Fish, an immortal fish who lives in Wakulla Springs in North Florida and famously "pole vaults" by swimming over an underwater pole near the springhead.
Increased pollution in recent decades has made the previously crystal-clear waters of the spring too murky and they no longer run the glass-bottomed boat tours, so most children nowadays will never be able to witness Henry... but he's still there.
(And some say that one day he'll have his revenge on those who have befouled his home.)
