Interesting how many anti-doomers don't do anything (or talk about) the upcoming doom, just complain about someone being a doomer.

Do you still shutdown windows with alt-f4?

So, Google support is pretty bad. I called them to verify that they received the needed information, then 24hrs later I received an email saying that I need to provide the information, and I reply to that email saying that I've provided that info, and if that isn't sufficient to tell me what info is needed, and never got a response after 24hrs.

As far as I can see, zero movement on an issue where I can't use my phone as a cell phone for 4 days now.

I read a while back about using blue noise to do things like song selection and I was thinking a bit more about that today. After looking, I realized that you have to have an "ordered" list for blue noise to work. If your list is unordered, then blue noise doesn't work.

I happen to find a good video about it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tethAU66xaA

And they mention exactly this at 18:42. It's also cool to see them talk about ɸ (phi, aka golden ratio), and this makes me think of another good video about the golden ratio which goes into more depth about continuing fractions and why phi is such a good "irrational" number:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sj8Sg8qnjOg

so much for quality Google engineering. Apparently they never thought anyone would use esims and want to switch back to a physical sim. Traveled recently, loaded a second esim into my phone, and in doing so, it looks like it disabled the physical sim slot when doing so.

At least that's my assessment since my sim card still doesn't work, and google support has to escalate the issue because their first tier support script doesn't fix things.

At a previous work, I implemented a SAML login flow and once I found out how easy the back end is, it really made me wish that more websites would allow you to enter your own SAML provider instead of locking you into the big ones.

If you could, I'd likely run my own, but it also would mean that your password manager company could instead be your SSO provider because that's really what a password manager is. They use a normal local auth/master password unlock and approve it.

But I can say that none of the big corps want that because it'll add competition. They'd rather have a limited set of big corps that they can colude with to keep competition limited than service their users.

Just someone using many to put words in other people's mouths that they don't say.

> many in the BSD crowd, “freedom” means the freedom to make the software proprietary,

Just trying to say BSD people want all software to be proprietary which is definitely not the case for me.

I want people to be able to freely using software so they don't have to rewrite it and create new bugs making software shittier than it already is.

If there's so much boiler plate that you need AI/LLM to help you write it, then that language/library is shit and/or has shitty documentation. Improve that stuff.

I will actively look for libraries that give working examples AND maintains them.

I've run into libraries where the docs are so outdated that that the examples don't even compile. That means all your docs are worthless.

It is funny that it takes AI for companies to realize that they need to write docs.

Just a reminder that the IETF is broken:

There's a reason I'm not a fan of curl. That it returns an exit code of 0 when a web site returns a 5xx error code by default. Yes, I can provide a -f to cause it to fail, but failng should be the default.

For reference, both wget and FreeBSD's fetch both return an error code by default.

(I'm also not a fan of the Python HTTP libraries that do the same. If the request fails, it should raise an exception, that is exactly what Python exceptions are there for. You can catch them and deal with the response that way instead of silently failing.)

Sorry, I got distracted, but I've now posted the FreeBSD 15.1-R magnet links at their usual place:
https://wiki.freebsd.org/Torrents

I'm seeding them all now, and as usual DHT will take a while to find the new torrents.

Sorry I missed the release of FreeBSD 15.1 that happened yesterday. I'm downloading the release now to prepare the magnet links. They should be ready in the next hour.

Ugh, it's terrible when you need the BNF to understand the docs properly.

Tried to get ethernet filtering working on pf (on FreeBSD), and I kept getting syntax errors and the like. Turns out that the section on ethernet filtering completely neglects to mention that you need to prefix rules with ether for them to work properly.

Nor are there any examples that would have made things easier.

Besides driving up electricity prices, data centers are also directly causing residential customers to use more electricity,

> A one-degree boost in air temperature, for example, is enough to drive higher use of air conditioning across entire neighborhoods. Those air conditioners, in turn, put even more heat into the surroundings.

Til.

I like the concept, but I'm not a huge fan of the lack of secondary auth. One of the things I like about su or sudo is that you need to know the password in addition to the ssh key's.

This is actually somewhat important as different machines can have different passwords, and this prevents a well I've got your ssh key now, I can log into other random servers as root.

Since dnssec is in the news again, I'll say that like 5 years ago I turned on dns validation on my recursive resolver for the house and no one has noticed a thing. I haven't gotten one complaint about websites not working or anything.

Maybe because so little domains have it enabled (likely).

I also haven't had any complaints about my domain either, and it's been running dnssec for over a decade.

Ms: we need more people to use OneDrive.
Ms: I know, why don't we prevent people from downloading their email attachments directly from the web client and instead force them to save to one drive?

Very annoyed that so many places think that my IPv6 addresses are VPN/proxy addresses when they aren't, and I've had them for like 15 years. I have turned off IPv6 because of this.

And don't tell me how I'm bad, tell orgs like Wikipedia to stop banning IPv6 addresses that are legit and preventing them from being "unblocked".

I'm seeing some weird behavior with FastAPI and async.

I have a function:
```
async def foo(r=[]):
if r: return r[0]
r.append(someobj())
return r[0]
```

Now I have that declared on a route via the usual:
```
@router.get('/somepage')
async def get_somepage(foo : Annotated[someobj, Depends(foo)]):
xxx
```

But in the foo function, I print the id of the r list, and each time somepage is fetched, the list is different.

I did finally just move r into the module name space, and that fixed things. But it's pretty clear that FastAPI is doing something wonky with function calls.
