A person who is employed as a vibe coder but seems to want to understand things better made a suggestion for my df game data utility.
I told them I take PRs.
They genuinely learned some things, as I guided them, but they ended up with something 100% unusable and asked me to finish it.
I implemented the feature from scratch, as I would write it, none of their code survived but I gave them some credit for effort.
Now they are saying I missed part of their feature 🙄

Crap.

Big businesses do this strategy - take over a market, stop working on it, supress competition. See Microsoft, for instance internet explorer.

I never thought of it being applied to intellectual pursuits - also in pursuits of profits from market domination. What a dark thought.

Hey, where'd all the block chain people go?

Im just living my life and mostly ignoring AI and I dont think its the wrong choice.

Writing unreadable code is now a metric of success.

df_game_data v1.0 released!

https://github.com/Atrix256/df_game_data

This is an editor and data compiler for read only game data in C++.

Describe schemas using C style stuct definitions, edit data in the editor, compile data to make a .bin file and a generated .h, use the .h to load the .bin in your code, make your game.

It supports hot reloading of the bin file as well.

Give it a try, tell your friends, let me know what you think. I made it for my own use, but is something that desperately needed to exist.

If you go to america.gov/chat and type "play minecraft" you get quite the response...

Think different.

Hello fellow kids. Where does one find the angst of nine inch nails and kmfdm in modern times?

There's a funner version of this where the 0 is replaced by epsilon ε (dual numbers) which sqaures to 0 but is not 0, and the 1 is replaced by j (split complex numbers) which squares to 1 but is not 1.

Dont forget. Bill gates got an std on epstein island, tried to hide it by feeding his wife antibiotics, she found out and that led to her divorce.
That is a lot, before we even start talking about the skeezy business practices. (Paladium, the browser wars, similar business practices in other areas, including directx vs gl)
He keeps trying to rewrite himself as a good guy. Dont forget history.

Today i got an EA backpack in the mail, like I was still an employee.
Hilarious.
So meaningless to them i cant even be removed from the employee list.
Id say "wonder why I left?" But they dont, and they dont care about anything I did or had to offer.
Entire teams are too small to move the needle for them.
Far too large a company to be effective at anything other than "regression towards the mean". So says the central limit theorem and the law of large numbers.

Tim Curry has passed away.
He did many amazing things, but my favorite was when he played darkness in Legend.
Years ago I made a song "The Lament of Tim Curry"
https://blog.demofox.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/lamentoftimcurry.mp3
And i wrote a blog post about how I programmed this song, sample by sample, in C++.
https://blog.demofox.org/2012/06/18/diy-synth-3-sampling-mixing-and-band-limited-wave-forms/
Listen to the song, read the blog post, and watch the movie!

Three logicians walk into a bar.
The bar tender asks "do y'all want a beer?"
First one says "I don't know", second one says "I don't know", the third one says "yes"

TIL about floating point math:

float w=a*b;
float e=fma(-a,b,w);

w is the closest float possible to the real answer of a*b, but the difference between that and the actual answer can be significant.

e is that difference, and apparently the difference is exactly representable as a float.

More optical convolution found in the wild :)

The other night I dreamed i fist fought Trent Reznor.
I know its not the right thing, and I know its not the good thing, kinda I want to.

My 9yo daughter said she wants to make a game with me, where she makes the art and I code it.
I said ok, and tasked her with making a standing/idle pose for the main character.
She delivered and wow, this is usable, actually. I have mixed feelings about it knowing what the life of a game artist (or a gamedev in general!) is like🙃

A Texture Lookup Approach to Bézier Curve Evaluation on the GPU
https://jcgt.org/published/0015/02/01/

New published paper!

The premise is that you can offload polynomial evaluation to the texture sampling unit, which can be useful for improving execution times if you are compute bound.

Readers of my blog may remember this from ~10 years ago. It has been improved with Seiler interpolation to be able to do higher order curves in lower dimensional textures.
