TIL that passkeys have support for remote attestation built-in. Once enabled by a service, without a US-American phone running software signed by a US-American company, on which you need to be signed in with your legal identity (thus rendering you unable to use it if you're sanctioned by the US), there is a pretty good chance that you'll be unable to use your passkeys in the future. That seems pretty damn terrible.

Don't use passkeys.

I'm working on a new pen testing service. It will use a bug bounty subscription where clients pay nothing when no new vulnerabilities are discovered.
Now I'm looking for some guinea pigs! Please ping me if you want a free audit of an online resource you own.

Very forceful statement by Terry Tao about AI and math.

Note, he is not claiming the models aren't real and powerful. He's talking about how that power should be used. This, I believe, is what all AI discussions should center.

➡️Americans and Canadians: do YOU recognize this man?⬅️

He collapsed on the streets of Amsterdam in 2023 with a brain injury. He wasn’t carrying ID and he lost most of his ability to communicate. His identity still hasn’t been established.

Interviews near where he was found have turned up that he was a native English speaker with an American or Canadian accent, enjoyed shopping for art, was passionate about Buddhism and cultures like Nepal, and gave different names to different people (Chris and Lucky being the best known). He was probably living a hippyish, off-grid lifestyle with substantial personal savings from earlier in life.

One of the few words he can still say is “nonsense,” so he probably said this quite a lot.

The Dutch Cold Case Team has taken over trying to identify him after time has not healed his ability to communicate. If you think you might know who he is, please help reunite him with his loved ones and give them closure. Scroll down on this page to the button that says “Tip via het formulier”, and rest assured sending messages in English is 100% fine. Also, his family won’t get a surprise bill for his hospital stay. https://www.politie.nl/nieuws/2026/augustus/17/een-heel-leven-maar-geen-naam-wie-herkent-deze-man.html

A haunting, sad but hopeful imagined version of what America’s end might feel like to the future, which hits very differently now from when I planned the speech back in 2006. It compares America to the first human infant carried & born in space, & wracked by the consequences.

This was a great read. I have so much respect for long-term open source maintainers and it's often a thankless job. So thank you, @flavorjon.es@bsky.brid.gy !

I'm generally in favour of space exploration and would love to see a research outpost on the moon or Mars. This book opened my eyes to the many challenges and unknowns that we still need to solve before we can get there, let alone actual settlements. Very well written and a fun read!

I've started publishing SHA256 sums for each sidekiq gem release. Is anyone aware of any better tooling for integrity verification for published binaries before I homebrew a bunch of scripts? It's pretty awkward as is.

This thread has great advice for anyone giving a technical presentation. I've learned a few of these the hard way!

I wrote about why I quit my job, and how weird and tiring tech feels these days.

Do I belong in tech anymore?

Even though this is about astrophysics, it captures many of my hesitations about using LLMs for non-trivial software development. You need to spend the time to learn your system and tools so you can tell when Claude is wrong.
