I considered ending the thread by explaining that anything which is published as a double column PDF is going to be the scariest shit you've ever read, because that means the authors know TeX, and that means they are going to take the intense suffering of using TeX out on you one way or the other. But then I thought about the poor innocent BlueSky users who are in the arts and potentially don't know what TeX is, and I thought, you know what, let them sleep a little longer.

Personally I think the Internet is extremely good, and it is television that is bad. The Internet only got bad when people from The Television moved in and started using it.

- I have upgraded my servers to fix the PHP bug.

- But I have not yet re-enabled them, as no one can explain how to test whether the update successfully protected me from the exploit.

- In the meanwhile, two people on Mastodon are trying to convince me there are other, unnamed live PHP vulnerabilities which remain unpatched, and it is unsafe to bring my site up even if today's two vulns are fixed.

"4" is 6 7 for Millennials. Don't @ me

New update. Google Translate is over. It is no longer willing to simply translate sentences. Every single translation you attempt it suggests a different sentence you could have translated instead. What?? Why?? Try to type English and it's constantly autosuggesting sentences for you to translate. "Writing assistant" trying to write your sentences for you, grabbing the keyboard out of your hand, no you're doing it wrong, let me write it for you, you're not writing it statistically average enough.

Personally, I am a fan of Warp Records from the 90s, so my favorite random number is "orange"

Anyway you can tell they were XKCD readers instead of Dilbert readers because the random number from Dilbert was "9"

Finally we have created the random number "4" from the famous XKCD strip "do not just make your random number 4"

Haha oh my god, every time you open a maps.google.com page now the "ask maps" icon on the left hand side pulses and gyrates going LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME. Google is SO SO ANGRY that we are trying to use the GUI instead of talking to their chatbot

Geez, look at those jacked up margins. it's so funny when you can tell the AI feature itself was vibecoded

Bob the Builder views Dan the Destroyer as villainous; Dan has this big long speech about how creation cannot exist without destruction, and in fact Dan exists to prevent Bob from destroying the world, as without a balance Bob's creations would simply grow without end until the entire world were encased in a deadening superstructure of meaningless, overgrown built environment

Bob the Builder's evil counterpart and nemesis, Dan the Destroyer

OK this appears to be the page that explains how to restore a lost session even when Mozilla cannot restore a lost session. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-restore-browsing-session-backup

Didn't occur to me "oh, you can't just leave a Firefox window open and assume it will still be open tomorrow. you are in the 1990s again".

Another thing!

I'm very frustrated how Firefox is SO INCREDIBLY INCONSISTENT about, when I recover from a crash

1. It reopens all my windows, even if there are 1,000 of them and this will create a problem

2. It reopens no windows, but I can go into "History" and recover them from "restore previous session" or "recently closed tabs"

3. It's gone! There's fucking nothing you can do!

I had a group of tabs with links I was meaning to copy into a file to save for later yesterday. Didn't hurry :(

Like… Windows in the year 2026… I have to reboot a lot because Microsoft makes you reboot a lot for updates. Linux I have to reboot a lot because it fuckin crashed. I'm getting like Macintosh System 7.5 levels of stability over here
