    @lanodan Debian has been a threat since they forced systemd in despite it not having the majority vote. I do not forget, and I do not forgive.

    @ska I bootstrap rust from source starting with a trusted C toolchain... but the process requires measures which seem overly "heroic" to me: we can use "mrustc" to build rust 1.29.2, then use the resulting rustc to build each following rustc until we get to the current one. (Reflections on trusting trust 🤦‍♀️)

    @eric_herman Exactly, and that's my main gripe with forcing Rust currently. The toolchain (singular, which is a red flag in itself) is nowhere mature enough, and its build process from source is way too difficult. Trusting a Rust program isn't any easier than trusting a C program, far from it.

    @ska @eric_herman a language having only one (production ready, so no mrustc for rus) implementation is a complete stopper for me when considering a language

    like, i can see some value in what rust provides, but i often feel i'd be better served by making a language myself than waiting for rust to be good

    @SRAZKVT @eric_herman Same. I like the idea of Rust, but the way it came about, as well as its development model, make me want to not touch it with a 10-foot pole.

    I am fortunate that the scale and scope of my projects, and the practices I have acquired over the years, make C a very good fit with little risk of memory safety issues.

    @ska @eric_herman im pretty much always looking for a language that could replace C in my usecases because C is Bad, actually.

    but near nobody making languages to replace C seems to care about why C devs use C. only potential replacements ive ever seen are hare and zig, and right now i would bet on neither of them

    but fir near every "C killer" i see, it's all for shit id be better off using go, scheme or python for

    @SRAZKVT @ska @eric_herman Yeah I don't think either Hare or Zig would replace C.
    And while I quite like Hare, it's just an alternative to C. Kinda like how Perl is an alternative to shell and it's surrounding utilities but would never truly replace them.

    Plus C is way too entrenched into Unix, in a way C++ had the best chances at that and thankfully completely blew it up by failing to have a proper ABI.
