I did it, everyone. I’ve mapped out the entire Bear blog challenge chain, starting at my friend @hdv’s entry. In the process, I did find a bunch of posts by bloggers that neither got tagged nor tagged anyone else, so these aren’t shown in this graph.

In total, I found 248 posts, of which 216 are linked to others.

With that out of the way, it’s time to start working on some drafts to share the process, visualisation challenges, and most importantly: these awesome blogs.

Many of the people I follow participate in this (Bear) Blog Challenge where bloggers answer questions and tag others. A couple of clicks later, my mind goes: I could plot this.

I made the mistake to commit to the impulse and invest way too much time in this. I’ve opened 161 posts on blogs in every shape and size and managed to graph 130. Professional, daft, minimalist, explosive, nostalgic, personal, niche, there are so many awesome blogs out there. I love this trend.

Here are some additional comments for shits and giggles.

I knew React was popular compared to “competitors”, but never expected it to be *this* popular. It’s in almost half of all openings! React is not my first choice for a rendering library, but it’s not worth giving up on half the opportunities.

Lots of surprises here. I thought Remix was more of a niche thing, expected Gatsby to be more popular, and Nuxt to be more popular than Astro. Y’all don’t know it yet, but in a couple of years, @astro will be on par with Next.js.

For the last few weeks, I’ve been analysing almost 600 front-end and full-stack job openings to learn about which technologies are in demand and valued, how many years of experience is required, whether we need a degree, whether or not companies care about accessibility and DEI, and more.

I always assumed the market share of Chrome would fade Firefox into irrelevance. It seems that Mozilla giving up on one of the things that made Firefox a sanctuary is doing a better job at that.

Where are y’all moving to?

Of all openings I collected (236), only 8 (3.39%) make mention of #accessibility.

Despite Trump policy — remember most openings in the dataset are US-centric — almost a quarter (22.46%) of openings make mention of DEI or one of its components.

Let’s finish with compensation. The extremes are extremely low and extremely high, ranging from $40k to $420k per year. The mode sits at $160-170k, and the mean is about $150k.

Take it with a big sack of salt.

Here’s the top 5 mentioned technologies for openings that mention #css (only 37):

- JavaScript: 100%
- React: 72.97%
- HTML: 67.57%
- TypeScript: 43.24%
- Ruby: 43.24%

What CSS will you be writing?

- Tailwind: 35.14%
- Sass: 8.11%

A majority of the openings explicitly mention #typescript: 56.19%!

Moreover, #nodejs leaves competitors in the dust — it’s the most popular JavaScript runtime by miles. In fact, of the 105 JavaScript-related openings, 26 (24.76%) mention Node.js, while Bun and Deno are nowhere to be found.

Openings that mention #javascript (105) also mention server-side languages. Ruby and Python are noticeably more popular.

I’ve been hoarding and analyzing front end and full-stack job openings on jooble.org, remoteok.com, weworkremotely.com, and workatastartup.com. While I hope to get more job openings (currently on 236) from more sources, and the results require some validation, here are some preliminary stats for your entertainment.

Note that the current dataset contains openings for predominantly US-based startups and scaleups.

Last months have been extremely turbulent and confusing, which spawns these random questions that occupy my mind for days. Today’s question is: have I reached a skill ceiling?

Now, I refuse to believe I’ve lost my ability to learn and grow, but I will say that some soft skills prove to be extremely hard to develop recently.

Some biases are fascinating. As a kid, I was in a car crash that was kinda traumatic — I was still in the car when it caught fire. I also vividly remember I thought we were going to crash only minutes before we did.

I still have these random moments where I anticipate accidents. They never happen, but the memory of that one time immediately comes back. WHAT IF I GET IT RIGHT THIS TIME AGAIN?

I don’t have super powers, but my biases implies I do! It’s funny how things work
