Did the full #handjam #crack in #Pløks the other day (second line from the left). Shoes really matter! A larger, flatter shoe can get deeper in the crack, making the feet much more solid. Loads of fun!

"Cars replaced horses"

This is what people say about LLMs, but it's based on a myth.

Los Angeles used to have an excellent tram system, with its suburbs laid out along the tram line. It was bought by General Motors and scrapped to get people into cars. The Key System, which went from San Francisco to Fresno, was scrapped by a tyre company. Cars did not replace horses in cities. They replaced effective mass transit by leveraging capital to destroy a common good. If cars were actually better, this destruction would have been expensive and unnecessary.

In more rural areas, bicycles were extremely common. They were most associated with liberating women, who were more able to commute and meet with neighbours. Bicycles became a symbol of feminism - for sexists. When male students at Cambridge wanted to protest women's admission, the built an effigy of a woman student and burned it. The effigy was on a bicycle. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cambridgeshire-45096690

This notion of women cyclists overstepping their place in society and being a menace to the social order appears in the 'Wizard of Oz'. In Kansas, a woman neighbour demands that the family give up Toto because he's been causing extremely minor mischief. Auntie Em tells the neighbour that she wishes to say what what she thinks of her, but can't as she is "a Christian woman". This places her in binary opposition with the neighbour who leaves on a bicycle. Toto escapes and as Dorothy goes to Oz, the woman transforms into a witch and the bicycle into a broomstick.

Bicycles fell out of fashion in the US until mountain bikes, which are loaded with male gender baggage and unsuitable to riding while wearing a dress or for commuting.

Households switched to cars which are expensive, so they tended to only have one, which men took to work and women were placed back in the home.

Cars are a malign presence. Their use was not the advance of technology, but deliberate concerted efforts to harm the public sphere and especially to disempower women. They only became practical because of massive subsidies for highways and roads. They are an inherently wasteful technology, ill-suited to a majority of their current use cases.

My sister is looking for someone who wants to help her practice her Danish speaking skills (she's level B1 and a bit out of practice). She's looking for someone to have casual conversations with maybe once a week. Are there any creatures on fedi interested in helping her out? In exchange she could for example help out with Polish or English speaking practice.

EDIT: we've found someone, thank you all so much for your help <3

It just really sucks that so many free software tools from the kernel and compilers up are rapidly reconfiguring themselves in service to slop generators.

I am so grateful for the effort people are putting to create human-centred forks.

But one thing I do think about a lot is the mental toll of constantly chasing a compromised version of someone else's vision v.s. pursuing new ideas.

The whole thing just feels like ddos on the attention of people who should be working on bigger things.

It is often presented to us that what is good for Wall Street is good for us.

David Graeber explained that this is not really true.

My first long-form video is up: Myths Around AI and Productivity! Based on the work we’ve been doing at @DAIR with The Luddite Lab, we dispel 5 common myths around AI and labor by looking at what studies actually say about AI’s impact on labor. https://youtu.be/3BO0iy91lfU

It’s hard to convey the scale and scope of how cooked a generation of people are by LLM slop.

“You can use AI to improve efficiency but make sure you double-check all its output to make sure it isn’t just hallucinating bullshit” thanks that’s actually more work and thus less efficient than not using an LLM at all.

“You have to double-check LLM output, but also if the task is too complicated or complex to figure out on your own, you should use an LLM” thanks but if it’s too complicated to figure out on your own, then you can’t double-check the output.

Just absolutely cooked.

If the technology is, in fact, so self-evidently great, then you could go off and build cool shit with it, prove us all wrong, and demonstrate the net utility argument you're trying to make all in one. Log the fuck off! Stop diddling with your giant pile of markdown files that beg the robot to please stop making mistakes and BUILD SOMETHING GOOD!

Whilst watching ducks and moorhens in RP, I didn't notice this water dragon beside me. Thank fuck it didn't mind me much as I was very close to it. Took this shot, and then its head started bobbing. That's my sign to back off. Its now amongst my favourtie photo of wild reptiles Ive ever taken. #Photography #Wildlife #darktable #wildoz #melbourne #oz #australia #Reptile #WaterDragon #IntoTheWild #GoldenHour #ReptileLovers

In today's edition of "Webshit that really grinds my gears", this payment option from fucking one.com:

"By making this payment, you agree that we'll save your payment details for future invoices"

Not a checkbox, no choice. Fuck you one.com

Situation: jeg har et domæne hos one.com, blev overflyttet fra gratisdns. Det sutter.

Er der nogle gode alternativer folk kan anbefale?

Rettelse: det er et .xyz domæne det drejer sig om.

- A fully slop-free setup

We've been hard at work and hybrid groups are finally coming very soon!

FYI, you don't want to get banned on the #Gentoo org on #Microsoft #GitHub right now, because vibe-hub is broken and I can only ban people but "something goes wrong" when I'm trying to see who's banned (and therefore I can't unban anyone).
