If you have 6 minutes to spare over the next few days, you need to watch #JonStewart on #TheDailyShow dissect the current #AI frenzy.
Why is late-night satire examining this reality with far more critical rigor than the very institutions whose job it is to study, regulate, and safeguard the intersection of tech, politics, and society? It is striking to watch those tasked with protecting the public stand at the front of the line, ready to blindly buy whatever tech billionaires put on the shelf..
The second anniversary of this post is coming up, and surprise surprise these little "end of life" laptops are continuing to run well with #linux and do what we need them to, which includes spending less on tech so we can buy more actual books for the school library. #schooltech #endof10 #edtech #foss #reading #kidlit
Remember when MS had a functional monopoly on the browser market and we went "hey, maybe one company shouldn't have a functional monopoly on the browser market"?
Good times.

Anyone with open commissions who wants to do some #art for NetBSD?
We've got a budget for paying for some concept art and can later talk about working with you on some merch. DM us!
Naturally, we cannot accept contributions using generative AI.

This is wild - somebody did a deep dive into the real stories behind this famous XKCD:

On the day that Margaret Hamilton, whose software helped land Apollo 11 on the Moon, died at 90, it's worth noting why computer programming became so dominated by men.
It wasn't remotely because men were better than women at programming. It was because, as soon as men realized how important programming was, they bullied and intimidated women out of the profession. And then smiled smugly and said: "Women can't program".
"The first 90 percent of the code accounts for the first 90 percent of the development time.
The remaining 10 percent of the code accounts for the other 90 percent of the development time."

"A Room You Can’t See: Your music library became endless. Something quiet disappeared when it did."
If you are in or around Bern (CH), and like coding, this might be for you.
Coding is a situated practice, meaning it can only become better if done together. ~routine is an intention and a wish to code regularly, with others, calmly, critically, cutesy, in whatever form. The format takes inspiration from lowkey's critical coding club and varia's calm coding. Come by to code, come by to knit, or simply come by for a cup of tea. Everything else is up for debate at this point.

I finally got around to starting a blog, and I have a whole single blog post!

It's something we're unreasonable pleased with ourselves about at work 😅
@b0rk my local library has a “tech time with Jim” where this old guy just sits at the table and handles everyone’s computer problems for free. Mostly old people. I was doing some work nearby, and it was fascinating to overhear. He would patiently listen and investigate and address exactly what he’s asked, and teach. They would tell him life stories and stuff. I think it takes some strength to be able to do this daily.
