Dear reader, we officially have three cats. My wife additionally took on five foster kittens and their mum recently. A #caturday thread... 🧵

What brought us abruptly to nine cats in the house was my wife assisting the local SPCA lady in a rescue after the kittens were spotted on a nearby rural road. It took a day or so to trap the whole family. With the shelters full, and 20+ cats already lodged at the lady's own house, my wife volunteered to put the six cats up.

This was widely considered a mistake, albeit a cute one...

For weeks now this growing brood has been steadfastly resisting domestication, and exhausting my wife. The kittens' mum is permanently sour-faced, probably quite justifiably from having her growth stunted by pregnancy at an early age -- we think this was not even her first litter.

The mum has visited the vet and been sterilised, and the kittens were also pronounced healthy, though that vet trip ended up with my wife on a course of antibiotics, and one of the kittens being renamed to "Biter".

Some of the kittens are already being lined up with new owners. So that should mean fewer cats in the house, right? Well...

On Monday evening I went to bed early and was woken in the early hours by unfamiliar annoyed cat noises from downstairs, and that was when I learned from my wife that we had taken in an additional cat – a friendly local stray who showed up injured – bringing us to ten (10!) cats in the house. Clearly impressed by this figure, I woke up just enough to say, "you crazy bastard, you did it!"

Bonus Cat was repaired at the vet the next day, neutered for good measure, and stayed with us a couple of nights to convalesce. He has now been released, minus what the SPCA woman calls his "trouble-puffs".

The saga continues. I wrote much of this thread while waiting for my wife in town, where she nearly picked up another stray. 😅
