every pill is a suppository if you have courage

dining philosophers problem? kick them out of your restaurant if they keep being disruptive

go on, tell me the reason why I don’t like php is elitism, and not the way it smells from a language design perspective

no you don’t understand, php is a good language now

fascists have been taking over open source projects for years, and torvalds going in on slop in the kernel with a “this isn’t a social warrior project” made them rally. it was a major victory for them. most of us have seen the fallout from that already, and it’s getting worse quickly.

and fosdem has bravely stood up and decided to be part of the problem

what good is fosdem

you know, it seems like fosdem sucks

I didn’t even have to check their posts to see they’re an AI whackjob, “have your agent run 2 commands for you” isn’t something anyone else says

“or have your agent upgrade” yeah we’ve learned nothing https://fosstodon.org/@anze3db/117474724435779931

remember, you have to update your computer to shittier and shittier LLM-generated code checked for quality by other LLMs, or you might have an embarrassing security incident!

it either took a lot of effort to make the private key the number 4 as a joke, or it took no effort at all to let an LLM fuck it up

I’m leaning towards the LLM explanation because “this xkcd in our plagarized training data says 4 is a random number and a bunch of other text references that” is exactly how LLMs pick numbers, and I can’t really imagine a scenario in which this joke is *for* anyone

either of these things happening might prompt a serious industry to re-evaluate and perhaps undergo systemic change

and the amazing thing is, there’s not really anything else it can be

you get to choose which is more alarming:

- someone went out of their way to make the private key 4 as a joke
- someone had claude code do it, and it generated a shitty broken script to change the private key and pulled the number 4 the same way it generates all random numbers: by pulling a non-random number from its training set that someone on the internet associated with the word random a few times (and that’s how it got the xkcd joke)

the infosec industry: “we demand respect. we’re using the latest frontier models to get ahead of threat actors. you’re not an expert so you wouldn’t understand but all the CVEs it spit out are top priority and breathlessly important and worth panicking about. no I won’t do any follow-up to see if the CVEs meant anything, my good buddy claude said they were all important and you have to respect it and me”

also, the highest echelons of the infosec industry, working on highly trusted cryptographic infrastructure: “the private key is the number 4 lol”

you tell me I shouldn't name my projects after farts, and yet backblaze is a relatively respected company

computer version of cottagecore called dumpcore

is this anything

do not program upon a computer

huh, somehow I missed this while I was distracted with netbsd (thank you @techokami)

> Thanks for linking my toot, here’s another update since then: the same person that found the race condition also found that there was a performance regression on non-synthetic benchmarks. It went super fast on his little test but is complete dogshit when used in the real world! https://lwn.net/ml/all/atI0edrmeiRuRtNQ@thinkstation/

the remarkable kernel patch that remarkably convinced linus torvalds to go all-in on LLMs, remarkably running into all of the reasons why this was a horrible fucking idea

anyone with an ounce of familiarity with how LLMs function could’ve seen this coming, but not kernel boy. why wouldn’t you slop up a feature and all of its tests and its documentation and then just go on vacation so someone else can try to clean up your mess?

you don’t have to respond to this by returning to hacker news by the way, because hacker news is a hate site

there’s uhhh better options than either? I help run one of the alternatives

regarding lobsters capitulating to the slopbros by deleting the vibecoding tag and a large number of AI-critical posts: lol

why in the fuck would I stir up a hate mob against netbsd

an operating system I like
