Yeah, *someone*'s definitely delusional.

One thing about every time bsky shits itself and I have to login again is that I'm reminded once again that they've managed to fuck up their login page so that it's incompatible with Firefox's password management, something that feel like it takes a special brand of incompetence to pull off.

If you believe that "ai" makes you 10x (or 50x!) more productive, what this tells me is that you are utterly useless and I'd be better served hiring or working with just about anyone else (though ideally someone with critical thinking skills and an interest in actually learning things).

Playing some Hyper Light Drifter...

Enjoying the scenic vistas, pictorial story-telling, mysterious artifacts, and buying thermal detonators from bird-person NPC vendors.

I did end up restarting in "Newcomer" mode, which is (thankfully) a little less punishing, but in subtle ways... mostly I have one more hit point and I thiiink healing kits are slightly more common. Some big-pile-of-enemies battles feel slightly easier but it's hard to put my finger on exactly why.

One of the things that drives me crazy about PS5 is how much of a headache it is to get screenshots or video captures off of the machine... you can awkwardly copy them to a USB device or awkwardly upload them to a small number of supported social networks... Steam Machine... how about ssh? samba? syncthing? some custom script you wrote? Pick your poison!

Steam Machine software recommendation (if you have video content you want to play off of the filesystem or local servers): Kodi TV

The default UI (it's themeable) is simple, tasteful, and unobtrusive, and it has been able to play anything I've ever thrown at it without issue, and also conveniently grabs metadata from various online sources.

Hah. I just noticed an alt-text typo in the bsky post that prompted this revelation, which, of course, I cannot edit, because bsky.

Fixing the error in the fedi post was, of course, trivial.

Of course it'd be even cooler if browsers would just handle soft subtitles included in videos (and/or content ingestion pipelines would extract them as necessary), but any support for soft subtitles is a huge step forward.

The script I use for video clipping in mpv will (optionally) burn hard subtitles into the clip, which is what I tend to do when sharing online, but it annoys me when we *have* the technology to do better here.

Okay, I dump on bsky a fair bit... I mean no edit feature (still), it tends to really mangle images when recompressing them, it has an obnoxiously low character limit, it's not *actually* federated in any meaningful way, etc, etc... but today I uploaded a video and they now let you upload soft subtitles (vtt format), which is an awesome feature that I wish Mastodon/Fedi (and other platforms that let you share video) would adopt!

A friend on bsky suggests that sometimes it's death-worshipping ignorance cults, which I cannot dispute.

Why is it always ignorance-worshipping death cults?

Glanced at LinkedIn tonight (always a mistake) and saw a post from some asshole I've never heard of quoting some other asshole I've never heard of (and citing him as some industry luminary) saying that the only way to maximize productivity in the new "AI" coding world is *never* reading the code.

It is kind of mind-blowing to watch the bulk of the software industry just 100% commit to destroying their ability to write and maintain software. These people are fucking insane.

Insightful thoughts on the insidiousness of these tools. I continue to believe that the only winning move is not to play.

Also fun are extremely detailed and lovingly curated game/publisher specific resources like Dustloop:

The Fighting Game Glossary is a fascinating world of genre-specific jargon. I've never really interacted with fighting games beyond a few minutes of extremely casual (and ineffective) play here or there over the years... so this is all new to me and fun to explore...

What are modern best practices for linking between DOM elements and JS objects?

I've seen (generally older) chatter about potential memory leaks, but not sure how much of that is a real concern beyond avoiding loops.

Data attributes are obviously useful and a "safe" namespace, but can only store strings.

Are there specific properties or property name patterns that are safe for use (won't collide with future builtins) for references to JS objects?

Etc, etc.

#WebDev #Questions

Anyone have favorite resources for modern vanilla (no piles of libraries, middleware, etc) Javascript / HTML / CSS techniques? Nice solid overviews, references, or cookbooks a plus. CSS, in particular, I've never fully wrapped my head around all the flexbox, grid, etc layout stuff.

I'm, against my better judgement, doing a bit of web app development, and actually having fun, but Search is Crap nowadays and pointers to modern resources would be handy.

Thanks!

I remember doodling with one of these flowchart templates when I was a kid (I think it was my mother's, from a COBOL course she took in college), and it never crossed my mind that IBM would have a whole *manual* about it, but of course they do.

And conveniently @bitsavers has a scanned copy online:
