Haven't really done the podcast thing fora while. Used to like Planet Money. My kiddo has played me a few episodes of The Magnus Archive, so I'm starting there. And I suppose I could revisit Greater Than Code. Any recommendations?

Also, these kids have a *very* different relationship to time than I do. They'll be all "well, we have nine minutes until the next train arrives; let's go explore the town" or "okay, I've booked the flight; let's see if we can make it to the gate before they close the doors." #JetLagTheGame

I fell off a skateboard six weeks ago today, breaking (as I eventually discovered) two ribs. I've been watching a LOT of #JetLagTheGame while benched.

I'll probably never travel outside North America again, but... if I do, this show has taught me one very important lesson: do not, under any circumstances, trust #DeutscheBahn to get me anywhere on time. Or, possibly, at all.

"We got Deutsche Bahn'd so hard they broke out the emergency rations."

Also, this framing is *so* revealing. It's like people who can't understand why atheists would act morally: it basically says "I'm only ✌️good✌️ because I fear punishment."

Regardless of whether that punishment comes from a legal system or a Sky Daddy, the result is the same: a person who should under no circumstances be trusted to make a moral decision.

...and we've stopped again for not one but TWO deer sacrifices to the gods of I-5 #Parenting #SpecialInterest #BoneCollecting

Current "road trip to visit family" status: hanging out in the car at a recreation area just off I-5 while my kiddo excavates the [rest of the] bones of a coyote whose [then fresh] head we took home on a road trip to visit family in March 2025 #Parenting #SpecialInterest #BoneCollecting

As much as I still absolutely love the Ruby language itself (I'm coming up on 20 years!), I haven't forgotten the DHH platforming, the RubyGems takeover, or the general sense of being in a shrinking niche.

I've been considering moving to a different Mastodon instance—but I have no idea how to choose one. Any suggestions?

this is as much about the US as it is Alberta as it is the UK as it is anywhere else. some of us enjoy some comfort, sure, but none of us have the care we deserve, and the fight won’t be over until we all do

pay attention to their glee as they strip us of our rights. not because it stings, but because we need to remember to be at least as gleeful when we take them back. trans rights for all of us, now and forever 🏳️‍⚧️

Yes, Siri, that is definitely what I told you to remind me about. It’s important to keep one’s miters properly hydrated.

Birthday bullshit update: new tool chest just needs one more bit of hardware (a lid stay) to be fully functional; after that, it'll just be figuring out how to cram my essential tools inside!

Will also need to build door frames, acquire hinges, and install acrylic panels on the mobile base.

I've had enough birthdays to not be particularly excited about them, but I will absolutely use them as an excuse to indulge in my own bullshit just a little bit more than usual.

they should make a type of computer that you go on and it makes you feel good

I wonder if this has ever been tried before, perhaps even with results documented on camera... 🍿 https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-10-31/waroona-shire-suggests-blowing-up-dead-whale-to-save-money/105954240

TIL that Burgerville will just sell you a cup of stumptown cold brew. And, if you ask them for no ice, you get even more stumptown cold brew. What an amazing life hack, I'm sure there will be no downsides

(NB: my usual daily caffeine intake is one cup of black tea in the morning)

At long last, The Market™️ has solved one of the pressing problems of our age: the inability to shoot flies with a pump-action shotgun without destroying the fuck out of whatever the fly happened to be sitting on. GOD BLESS THE USA

@ivory I've been seeing this a lot lately. Seems very common when people post links to Threads.

@nocontexttrek @nocontextb5 lmao

There's been a lot of Life Stuff happening (I start moving tomorrow; it's a good thing), so I haven't put any energy into an active search, but it seems worth mentioning that, if someone needs a very senior, very backend Rubyist with strong OO/TDD/refactoring/maintenance/cleanup skills, I wouldn't mind having more interesting work to do. Major bonus points if there's mentoring to be done. https://resume.livingston-gray.com/looking_for.html
