This post didn’t age well. Later that week, my wife purchased an i7 270k plus for me, so had to order a new motherboard and rebuild.
So the newer build is even zippier!!
Also of note, #Haiku won’t boot on the new system. 😢

I have really liked what #Umbrel 2.0 has done. So much so that I moved my data and wiped my main Fedora server and installed it to there and have been running it for about two weeks now. Now I’m debating on consolidating my data silos and building a new NAS/homelab based on it.
There are a few little visual bugs here and there but overall it’s a good major release.
I think so far the only features I’d like to see are:
A way to dedicate apps to their own pool/disk. I don’t care if the apps die. It’s their data I’m concerned with. So keep the data pools like they are now but instead of only being able to move apps to an external drive, let me choose another disk I don’t have in the main data pool.
A way to promote/migrate an app/container/VM from one Umbrel to another. Mainly I have a dev and a prod cluster at home. I’d like to play with stuff on my dev, then when I like it, migrate it right over to my prod instance.
Keep this up and I might just have to buy an Umbrel Pro to go with my main NAS and my BeeLink ME Mini.
It’s weird to me when open source projects tout how open they are, discuss how they’re open, and gatekeep how open other projects should or should not be called open source when those same projects use so many closed source applications in their “stack” like Discord and GitHub.
Who would have thought @Roku was ever gonna do this?
So irritated that I’m not going to be able to get to see the theatrical release of Akira in 4k. 😔
It’s been a week but I’ve been really happy with my new PC build. I went with large fans and airflow and I really just never hear it. Counting the GPU and PSU fans, it sits at 10 fans: 6x 140mm, 2x 120mm, and 2x 85mm on the GPU.
I think the ONLY thing that I feel like I gotta change is the annoyingly blinding blue LED in the power button. Blue LEDs already annoy me but heck it’s bright. I think I’ll pull it out and put a soft white LED in it that barely glows. I fear it’s gonna be a lot more disassembly than I want to do, though, so I might live with it and put a piece of vellum over it or something. It seriously lights up the wall across from the PC.

I’m still bummed I never had a chance to play with a Jolla Tablet. It looked really nice.
@thomholwerda you taken yours out of the drawer recently given all the Jolla news?
I dunno WTF happened, but in the last few weeks it seems Gmail’s spam filtering just decided to stop working.
What is normally a 50 email per week box for me has jumped to over 1000 emails a week.
It’s nuts.
The rest of the parts arrived today for my newish PC build.
Except the motherboard. It's been in town since Friday, but the ol USPS decided to move it to a Monday delivery. They decided this after 5pm today.
I am saddened I wasn't able to build my newish PC today. It's been decades since I built a PC. Last time I can remember building one was for BeOS.
With all the garbage out there these days, I kinda wanna go back to COBOL.
Watching people restore the old Sega Game Gear on YouTube makes me miss my old Game Gear.
The hp OmniDesk AI M03 sure is a pretty PC- ruined by the inclusion of only two ram slots in the tower version.
TWO.
In a desktop.
All that space and only two slots.
TWO.
Woke up at 52 degrees fahrenheit with windows open this morning. Currently only 58 and almost noon. Glorious for this time of year here in Idaho. Makes me sad for the heatwaves Europe is experiencing.
I don't normally dream of the past, nor in such vivid detail.
Last night, I dreamt of BeOS. I dreamt through the interactions I had with people. Entire conversations I had in BeShare. Thom. Eugina. Ton. Serpentor. Jeremy. Minox. mmu_man. Berndt. The friends I made and traveled to meet.
The huge trinitron monitor I used. That Acer FP2 I migrated to for an amazing all-in-one experience with BeOS. Syncing my IBM C3 (PalmPilot) to BeOS in that little cradle. The MO44 I purchased to support the company and never used. Controlling my house through my X10 gear with BeOS. The happiness the day I acquired a BeBox and a BeIA tablet.
The things I built. The code I wrote. The BeShare PPC versions I built on my BeBox and Apple Performa for Jeremy to put on BeBits. The machines I upgraded. The NDAs I signed to get hardware and docs to write drivers for.
The day Be, Inc. called me and asked politely for me to stop sharing the source code that was shared to my open BeShare instance making me the only official BeOS bug that's an actual person!
The day I signed up for WalterCon. Haiku. YellowTab. The controversy.
The sadness of the day I had to list my whole collection on eBay to flee a dying economy and move my family. The awesomeness of knowing I was mentioned @osnews for my collection being up for grabs. The knowledge that my BeOS collection literally saved my family.
The years and years of joy I had with it.
I woke up sad things aren't like that anymore.
I woke up happy it happened.
Thanks JLG and crew.
*Sorry I keep editing it, but I was just waking up and wrote this so I wouldn't forget it. I'm updating as things become more clear as I fully wake.
No, VRML was the beginning of the spatial web. I was there, Gandalf.
#applekeynote2025
I really do miss #BeOS. I've been doing file transfers a lot this past year as I consolidate, clean up, and recover old drives of data. One of the nice feature Tracker had was the ability to pause a file copy. I'm moving TBs of data in both MacOS and Linux and sometimes in the middle of a 12 hour copy, it'd be nice to pause it so the disk isn't thrashing for something *I* need.
I'm not convinced computing has gotten better since then.
5.2 TB of flash storage added today. Dual boot @elementary and @fedora on the new rig?
Not that I can go to SCaLE this year (I wish I lived closer), but is @elementary gonna be there?
