We really are facing the greatest existential threat to humanity for over 900,000 years. But other localised civilisation-ending catastrophes provide us with clues as to what awaits us. We either go in at full speed, blind or we try to apply the brakes by preparing as a nation as best we can for what is (no its, no buts, that option was probably lost decades ago now) to come.
