periodic reminder

I was trying to figure out how to make an enclosure for my remote display and came up with this system of corner bumpers. I kind of like the hacky feel. Also experimenting with shading film for the acrylic. Fun day so far.

Impromptu clock repair! One of the Nixies failed with a short between 1 and 6, so both filaments would light up at the same time. Otherwise it's been working flawlessly so I guess I should make more of them.

I have been chipping away at this large remote display for a few weeks and finally got it to show some numbers. Still lots of work to do but it's encouraging to see it working end-to-end.

(As with all things LED, it's hard to photograph and it looks better in person.)

problem solved

A good decision I made with my workbench was to hide power cables behind panels, but make it easy to get to them if I needed to. A bad decision was not offsetting the backboard far enough from the window sill, so it's a pain to wiggle plugs through the gap.

She has just been briefed by a reliable source that she is the good girl.

As far as I can tell 100% of software jobs have become “poke the AI until it seems to work” and it’s very upsetting … I’m good at writing programs but that’s not a job anymore and I feel increasingly alone and adrift. Annoying times.

Got a new soldering iron tip, which is kind of like getting new socks. Which at my age is thrilling. Anyway, mood: elevated.

I fretted a little bit over how to label these since most of the names could be reversed, but when I asked myself "what would I call this?" it was never ambiguous. Problem solved. Brains are weird.

Over lunch I hooked up an LED display and a better antenna and got a prototype remote display (core and ambient temps) for the Combustion probe (with a booster, which you need for grilling). Need much bigger LEDs of course. 2/n
