‘Lotek_Design’ brought his #Zelda Link to the Past clock to the #AshevilleMakers meetup last night - and it was if anything even more impressive in person than in pictures or videos.

IMO one thing late twitter got right is making "likes" non-public. Having all likes be public is a recipe for performative "liking" which is a scourge of most social mediums, and encourages tribalism over individual thinking.

Wow, this is just crazy. And cruel.

I think immigration in this country needs comprehensive reform that includes ways for the undocumented to become documented, legitimate immigrants. And I think there are legitimate debates to be had about how to do that. But, for what it’s worth, people applying for green cards while in the USA are, as they say, ‘waiting in line and doing it the right way’.

Much of the ‘don’t use AI’ discourse doesn’t fully account for the fact that the web has, at this point, largely been ruined by AI slop and, before it, SEO spam.

For example, I’m building a shed with concrete block foundations on gravel pads. Some of the blocks are hollow. Should I fill them with concrete?

Any search for this just produces reams and reams of slop and spam, with advice ranging from ‘absolutely yes and you will die if you don’t because they will not be strong enough and fall apart’ to ‘no that’s a terrible idea they’ll fall apart in winter if you don’t leave them hollow’. Or both in the same ‘article’.

I don’t think the web used to be like this.

Claude gives a nuanced answer that *sounds* true (it’ll make them a bit stronger, but they don’t need to be stronger).

Basically any search for technical advice is similar. The only sources left that give advice from humans are YouTube (and similarly but less good, TikTok etc), the few still-standing web forums, and Reddit. Or books.

So, I’ve always been a proponent of crewed space missions, but if I had any doubt this Artemis moon flyby is extinguishing them.

Hearing the crew discussing observations with Mission Control, moving cameras around, describing what they see, reacting to events and to curiosity and changing what they’re doing accordingly. And obviously just SO EXCITED to be doing it all. Just amazing.

I asked Walmart’s AI bot about this power cord with two plugs that it sells online.

After a sales pitch, with some more questioning, it concluded that “Selling items that are inherently dangerous or fail to meet established safety standards can lead to legal repercussions and is against the principles of responsible commerce.”

I was struck by this:

…and how it matches my own ‘traffic’ behavior/emotions. I’m much happier driving a longer distance - and taking longer - if it means not sitting stopped in traffic, because then I’m always moving and making progress. I know this is unreasonable and inefficient, so I try not to give in to it - to my emotional detriment.
