This is my favorite @daringfireball post in a while. Gruber lets rip delightfully.

I hate subscription apps unless they are providing a service that intrinsically requires an online data source or infrastructure. Intrinsically is the key word here.
I happily subscribe to Callsheet and use it, often multiple times a day. It’s great.

Wherein my point that the MAGA pathology and the BernieBro pathology are powered by the same fuel gets made for me:

This was all going great until ‘take over the Democrats’. Primary in populist lefties and they’ll lose, everywhere, in the general elections everywhere that’s not already blue.
Weird question for the Fedi:
The phrase "Welcome In" said in english. Every time I've heard or read it, it's always been a) rare. Like VERY rare. b) Always spoken/written by somebody for whom English (American English anyway) was not their native language.
Now I seem to hear it more often "Welcome In”" from very, very much American English speakers.
Where/How did this start?
Avoiding isolation is hard.
For me, some social orgs I belong to are anathema to many of my friends & political fraternity outside them. They don’t see why, in agreeing with them about most, I can’t agree about all. This Is bi-directional & isolating.
And…
Some industries/institutions attract bad people. My last job, (10+ yrs) net shrank the social circle because most of my fellow employees were horrible people I had to strive to appease at least and, ideally, mask for to survive. Drained me.

If I had just bought the car, I’d be immediately using my state’s seven day ‘I’m out, get €£¥%’ed’ law and returning the car.
If I had one longer term…I’d be finding other ways to make this untenably for BMW.

Publishing this image now without context should end a bunch of careers at the Times.
Don’t even think about mailing in a ballot. Show up & vote. Do it in person & in as large a group as you can muster. Those around you with work, mobility or other challenges? Find ways to help them get to the polls.
The only power you have at the polls are numbers & the ballot. Use those. Resist all urge to represent minority-coded views in your conduct & dress at the polls. If you have purple hair? Cover it with a hat. Dress like it’s a horrible corpo job interview. No symbols. Stealth wins.
This should not be possible. This, in all the ways, is emblematic of our profound societal sickness. https://tech.slashdot.org/story/26/07/27/0238219/a-new-middle-class-of-content-creators-is-quietly-quitting-the-9-to-5

Google has become completely cancerous and, frankly, should be ground to dust…
But this is absurd. In the grand tradition of idiotic government policy, it makes everyone less safe, creates more costs and completely ignores the core problem.
(The core problem is behavioral advertising. Just ban it outright and a HUGE portion of other problems will solve themselves.)

The problem with this narrative is that it paints the journey of the founder as some sort of fall from grace when there was ample indication he was the same guy from jump.
Stop assuming lefty adjacent sounding food ideology is an indicator of good moral character. Those underlying ideologies permeate the worst of our culture’s elements as much as any other, arguably moreso.

Horrible people doing horrible things being ‘triggered’ when called out for it is not a problem, it’s a valid life goal.
This is really good and Dr. Lenore is sharp and genuine. I am amused, a lot, by the pokes she took at Yale’s AI idiocy while ignoring Harvard’s… where she works…is a chaired Professor… https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/decoder-with-nilay-patel/id1011668648?i=1000777528218

“This could mean training AI systems to be coherent characters that enjoy their work or allowing them to exit conversations if they feel distressed (something Claude can already do). “
That parenthetical right there disqualifies the writer.

Yes on the distillation permission. No on them being allowed to scrape under fair use.
Yes, this will destroy the business model of the frontier model makers.
This is a feature not a bug.
