I think we can do a lot to protect e2ee group metadata without the threat model being "hide from fascist intelligence agencies with nation-state backing". even Signal falls short there as the FBI (and even journalists) have used side-channels to break their security model.

at a protocol-level, I don't see why we couldn't at least attempt to take lessons from the "sealed sender" approach
